Good thing it wasn’t a three hour tour, or they would have been stuck on an island for years.
The Pacific Ocean is really big.
Jennifer Appel looks to be in very good shape for a person that had been lost at sea for five months.
Whadddowegot - two dykes in a dingy?
Great job by the US Navy. Incredibly bizarre story though. OK, so the engine failed. It’s a sailboat. It seems that instead of just floating along, one could randomly choose just about any direction but south and eventually hit some sort of landmass
I know nothing about sailing. Water purifiers and 1 year supply of food seem smart, but wondering about having no ability to repair motor, and no navigation equipment (or skills to navigate by star)
The dogs were luckiest of all...
“primarily oatmeal, pasta and rice.”
All which requires copious amounts of water, and heat to boil it with. Is cooking such in saltwater a nutritionally good idea? else how much pure water did they have? Maybe a desalination system on board, but what resources limit its use? Whither fuel?
Wow, judging from the pics, the dogs survived just fine on that diet. Thought they needed more protein.
My wife would've been in big trouble, however; she absolutely hates oatmeal and won't eat pasta and rice because of the carbs. So we would've taken a lot of freeze-dried vegetables onboard... And I would've died.
This is why God makes airplanes and swimming pools.
Now that's prepping!
Never take what you need. Always take what you thought you'd never need.
Lost thousands of miles from their destination?
Gezzz, do these people not know how to read a compass and use a map?
Being aboard a boat is just like prison, with a risk of drowning.
Good thing they had food and water purification.
Been there, done that. My ship (USS Vulcan, AR-5) was diverted to a rescue mission for a disabled sailing yacht, named the Northern Light if I recall correctly. We took her under tow until the Coast Guard could arrive on the scene and relieve us. A deck Seaman, I stood a couple of watches tending the towline.
Can you imagine how bad they smelled.
This story is just weird. These women had a ton of stored food, and obviously a de-salinator and some sort of way to cook, enough wherewithal to stay alive, the mast didn’t appear broken, there was still a sail attached to the boom and no mention that the boat was disabled yet...
Oddly, I would have though that some sort of distress flag or sheet at the top of the mast would also be in order.
I wonder how they made energy to power the radio?
I really don’t get it.
How many dogs did they start out with?
