Clinton Campaign, DNC Paid for Research that Led to Russia Dossier
The Washington Post ^ | 6:21 p.m. EDT Tuesday, October 24, 2017 | Adam Entous, Devlin Barrett and Rosalind S. Helderman

The Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee helped fund research that resulted in a now-famous dossier containing allegations about Donald Trump’s connections to Russia and possible coordination between his campaign and the Kremlin, people familiar with the matter said.

Marc E. Elias, a lawyer representing the Clinton campaign and the DNC, retained Fusion GPS, a Washington firm, to conduct the research.

Fusion GPS hired dossier author Christopher Steele, a former British intelligence officer with ties to the FBI and the U.S. intelligence community.

Elias and his law firm, Perkins Coie, retained the firm in April 2016 on behalf of the Clinton campaign and the DNC. Prior to that agreement, Fusion GPS’s research into Trump was funded by a still unknown Republican client during the GOP primary.

The Clinton campaign and the DNC through the law firm continued to fund Fusion GPS’s research through the end of October 2016, days before Election Day.

Fusion GPS gave Steele’s reports and other research documents to Elias, the people familiar with the matter said. It is unclear how or how much of that information was shared with the campaign and DNC, and who in those organizations was aware of the roles of Fusion GPS and Steele. One person close to the matter said the campaign and the DNC weren’t informed of Fusion GPS’s role by the law firm.

The dossier has become a lightning rod amid the intensifying investigations into the Trump campaign’s possible connections to Russia. Some congressional Republican leaders have spent months trying to discredit Fusion GPS and Steele, and tried to determine the identity of the Democrat or organization that paid for it.

SNIP

Elias and Fusion GPS declined to comment on the arrangement.

Remember. The FBI used the dossier to ask for FISA warrants. These warrants were used to spy on the Trump campaign and after the election.

FWIW, I’ve wondered if McCain, Steele, and Tim Kaine being at that security conference in Halifax that August was just a big coinkydink, or if something related to this happened there.

We should get a clue from watching how the Dem surrogates on Fox react.

Can you imagine the FISA judges reading about golden showers and saying ‘sure, sounds legit, here’s your rubber stamps’?

“FBI used the dossier to ask for FISA warrants.”

Recall the term so often used on “Law and Order” — help me here — something about the spoilage of the fruit of the tree.

Taking bets...

It could get complicated if the nature of the work being done shifted when the DNC picked up the project. There is nothing wrong with legitimate opposition research. But what Fusion did appears to have gone well beyond the boundaries of legitimacy. So: when did Fusion go rogue? From the beginning? Or later?

Yes the same Perkins Coie (originally a Seattle firm) which sent a female associate to Honolulu to pick up the faux long form birth certificate, the transmission of which was organized so as to avoid any White House related prints on the entire process.

Clintons and Obamas share the same law firm, I guess, as crooked lawyers are in short supply. /S.

I don’t much believe in coinkydinks any more .... you know, like Bill & Loretta bumping into each other at the airport - ha ha. I suspect the Halifax conference was perfect cover for a bit of a “rendezvous”. Purportedly, McStain & Timmy were rather ‘chummy’. I didn’t know Steele was there.

I think I know why this report was filed. Again, goes back to my question, who are they protecting.

If they get this out, maybe their hopes are the subpoenas for Fusion GPS banking records will go away and the originator will be shielded.

I agree with you, that this has the smell of the Bush cabal all over it

Remember when George Herbert Walker (Globalist Whore) Bush declined to attack Clinton on the sex scandals, saying in that curiously feminine and halting voice of his,

"Wouldn't be ... prudent."

But the verminous scum had NO problems scuttling the Reagan revolution, did he?

This is why Fusion doesn’t want their bank records released.
