'The Peshmerga sold us out': Kurdish shock and disbelief after losing the gamble for independence

Not much more than a month ago, Iraqi Kurdistan's leaders seemed sure that their path to independence was all but guaranteed.

The autonomous region controlled swathes of disputed territory once administered by the federal government in Baghdad, including vast oil reserves and energy infrastructure.

Its armed forces, known as Peshmerga, enjoyed a formidable reputation and had cooperated closely with the US and other powerful allies in the fight against Islamic State. The way, they thought, was clear.

returned to Baghdad.

It was a rout that blindsided many of Iraq’s Kurds and left their long held dream of secession in tatters. In the regional capital of Erbil, officials, soldiers and civilians alike are still struggling to come to terms with this profound humiliation.

“The Kurdish community never expected such a reaction from the Iraqi government,” said Alan, 26, who asked that he be known only by his first name. “We didn't expect them to attack us and take Kirkuk by force, it has become like a siege now.”

The crisis was largely impelled by last month's controversial independence referendum, which faced near-universal opposition.

Neighbouring Turkey and Iran found a rare moment of unity to agree retaliatory counter-measures, while Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi threatened military action if the results were not annulled. Even allies — with the exception of Israel — begged the KRG to postpone or cancel the vote, for fear it would destabilise the entire region.

But Mr Barzani pressed on, seemingly confident the results would trigger secession talks in which they would hold a major advantage.

That now appears to have been a miscalculation of epic proportions. Voting went ahead as planned on September 25 and results reflected an overwhelming desire to leave the rest of Iraq.

The backlash was rapid.

Who wrote this tripe!

The only “sell out” was from Iranian led Iraqi forces eager to once again capture Iraq’s richest area, those oil fields in the northern area of the country, known as Iraq, set up by the British.

The Kurds are the most loyal to the U.S. and want nothing more than to be left alone to live by their own customs, not bowing to the hated Iranians nor Syrians!

It’s amazing that every power on earth seem dead set on the Kurdish people having their own country, so much so, they are willing to enslave the Kurds to do so.

Let those people go!!!

“”””For Baran Abdullah, 25, a Peshmerga fighter whose unit recently retreated from the disputed town of Makhmour, the US was no longer a friend.

“We don’t trust Americans anymore and we don’t need them anymore,” he said angrily. “We are finished with them.”””””

It’s so grand.

Time to send everyone who supports ME intervention over there to fight. Everyone. From the bureaucrats, REMFs, Senators on down to the bloggers. They get an M16A1, two magazines, a frag and a C-rats ham and mother****ers unit. Go to town boys. Save us all.

It is a recipe for endless war, isn't it? Who benefits? Is the average American better off?

Gosh, it’s only taken them this long to be disgusted with the U.S.?

Geo. H.W. Bush, after encouraging them to help us in the first Gulf War, left them to be slaughtered by Saddam Hussein, after we gallantly strolled back out of Iraq, having forced him back home!

We lied to those people, telling that if they stood up to Saddam, we would have their backs! We did, but with a knife in it!

Same story after 9/11, when U.S. troops came back all the way to Baghdad. When Cheney predicted we would be welcomed with open arms, we sort of were by the Kurds who learned not to put all their eggs in the U.S.’s basket!

It was the Iranians who armed and led Iraqi forces.

Now, it appears the U.S. is ready again to shiv the Kurds in favor of Iran and even Syria, both of whom demand “desaturated to Israel!”

Current results were guaranteed when Daddy Bush decided to defend Kuwait. The USSR was gone and the globalists needed a new international conflict. So CIA Bush gave it to them. We’ve been on the losing end ever since. Now the Kurds are down the toilet and the world sees how dangerous it is to trust the Yanks. Good job, ME interventionists. Good job.

For a number of reasons I rarely link into sources. Particularly when they are run by a bunch of perverts which include NYT, WApoo, Yahoo, and the alphabet soup, because the piece (article) is corrupted by a viewpoint known as propaganda.

In this case this piece seems to reinforce distrusting Kurds. The situation about Kirkuk is complicated and the Kurds are divided about going about gaining independence.
