I’ll confess an unpopular opinion. The radio podcast “Serial” had a 13-part series built out of some recordings a guy did with Bergdahl. (And yes, the podcast creators did interview other soldiers in his outfit, who really detest what he did.)

Bottom line:

a) idealistic kid — and no clue how Religion of Peace operates

b) his chain of command didn’t want to listen to his concerns, thus leadership failure

c) Bergdahl made repeated efforts to escape his captors

None of this excuses what he did. It does help explain it. The whole series gives a bit of perspective. But please go dig up the entire podcast, listen to it, and form your own opinions.

Frankly, I don't care if he was Mother Theresa, there are somethings you just don't do when in enemy territory. As far as I am concerned, his sentence should be the firing squad.
