Disagree....irrational rage is where spanking runs amiss. Anger ruled by rational justice will modify punishment whether spanking or being sent to one’s room without supper. Anger motivated by justice can initiate positive change.

Yes, I meant when anger reaches irrational rage, when I said when anger runs amiss. Rage is a level of, not independent of anger. Rage comes when we allow anger to take over and short cut reason, reason to take control of anger and direct it with reason. Rage is anger run amiss. You and I do not disagree. I just didn’t explain fully what I meant.

“... irrational rage is where spanking runs amiss...”

I totally agree. If a parent decides to swat a tushy, it should ONLY be done when the parent isn’t angry. Thus, the parent will be acting out a punishment calm headed vs lashing out when angry. I truly believe when you ask people who were hit a lot... “can you name the incident/times you were hit?” They answer “all the time”. Ask a person whose parent remained calm or waited a bit for a punishment and they usually can NAME the incident when they were hit. Case in Point: I know a kid that was hit all the time. He was hit when he got a “B” on his report card (thus “embarrassing his Father because all the other grades were “A’s”). He was hit when he accidentally skipped one line in the grass when cutting it. He was hit when his internship ended. The result is now a grown kid that has NO respect whatsoever for his Father and the Mother that allowed it. He will graduate soon and plans on moving far away.. having little contact whatsoever. He fears that if his Father hits him again (and now being grown) that he will hit him back and seriously hurt him. At some point, I know the parents will wonder why they don’t hear from their son. Hope they never ask me my opinion....
