The decisive moment in Watergate came when the Republican leadership on the Hill met with Nixon and told him that they could no longer defend him. Nixon stepping down became a bipartisan demand. The alternative would have been impeachment. This is how a healthy political system in a healthy republic should resolve such a situation.

Bill Clinton would have been forced from office had a single Democrat in the Senate had the integrity to break omerta and stand up to party-line defense of corruption. None did. Some thought John Glenn would do it, but he was bought off with a carnival ride. Many thought Robert Byrd would do it, but he consulted with Plutarch and his conscience, and decided against a profile in courage. Decades of sporting his rhetorical toga, and when his moment came, he turned out to be a weasel. The Romans would have been ashamed of him.

Does Hillary deserve to be prosecuted and sent to jail? Yes. So does her husband. But unless it is bipartisan, the next Democratic president will order the prosecution of the last Republican president, and maybe more than one. Antifa will be running the Justice Department. That's the problem. Every change of power between the parties will become a moment for revenge. That is how republics die. We are in very dangerous territory, and we are here because there is no Democrat of rank with enough courage and integrity to break with a partisan coverup.
