Why?
The CW was pretty high up on the list of asinine.
Just let them go. No sense wasting lives, money and angst over a natural right.
American dirt. You don’t advance by retreating!
Major US military ports, training facilities, national labs other federal (”paid-for-by-all-of-us”!) assets cut off or lost. Hawaii, Guam, Samoa, etc cut off then lost.
Relations with Japan, Philippines, South Korea, India & all Southeast Asian powers will be compromised, then eroded then gone. The US will no longer be a Pacific/Asian power.
Most practical and obvious reason, if California secedes China will immediately move in to protect them. (You think the “California Army\Navy\Air Force -former CA NG!” can stop them? You think they will even be ordered to?) China will be asked to come in to protect California from the USA ! There are plenty of leftists there who will have no problem with that. And its logical for them to do it!
You want to share a border with a hostile nuclear armed world power? You think you have a border problem now? Wait until all the illegals, “coyotes”, druggies, etc. have the backing of a world power - China. A power who understands and is adept at “subversion”. Don’t interpret what I am saying as an inordinate fear of China. It’s just the logical next step for California as a separate nation. China is a rising power, it remains to be seen if we are a falling power. If we shed California due to some misplaced nostalgia for what might have been for the South, we will definitely be a falling power.
China is already training for an opportunity like this. They are becoming heavily involved in Africa. They’ll now have troops and a naval base in Africa. So moving troops half way around the world to fill a power vacuum they can sort of do now, in a few years they will be very good at it.
I prefer to deal with China where China is - in China, not at the Rockies!
NO! You cannot infiltrate a state with a foreign population illegally and then claim you have sovereignty. That’s called invasion and occupation. They have to go back.
