Hollywood’s Diversity Problem and Undocumented Immigrants
New York Times ^ | October 19, 2017 | By MONICA CASTILLO

Immigration is a part of Hollywood’s story just as much as it is America’s. In the early years of cinema, many of the first regular moviegoers were working-class immigrants. Immigrants founded major studios like Paramount and Warner Bros.

Yet, the story of coming to America seems to have fallen off multiplex marquees at a time when immigration has become one of the most contested issues in politics. Sorely missing are movies about undocumented immigrants, an absence that is glaring even in an industry that has struggled to keep up with the times.

Reporters and documentarians are sharing the tales of children and young adults brought to this country at a young age, but no major studio has produced a film about an undocumented character. As some of the country’s major storytellers, why don’t the studios tell these remarkable stories?

Immigrant stories once appealed to studio executives. After all, they released narratives like Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather Part II,” Elia Kazan’s “America America” and Barry Levinson’s “Avalon.” These stories didn’t focus on the legality of their arrival, just that their characters made the difficult journey and lived in America.

“El Norte” is grim and realistic about the difficult odds facing undocumented immigrants even after they arrive in America.

But where are the movies about the latest generation of undocumented teenagers and young adults — more than 800,000 of them now — who have become teachers, analysts, students, bankers and artists? There should be an imperative within the creative community to include as many of these voices as possible, since art and entertainment made by and about those yearning to breathe free is just as much a part of our heritage as it is theirs.

One in 5.5 Americans is an immigrant, legal or illegal.

You’ve had your day, now get in line.

According to this article, Immigrants gave us the cultural spewing sewer of Hollywood.

Not a very good argument for more immigrants.

We need a 20 year moratorium on all immigration.

From anywhere.

My Grandmother was an immigrant...came here legally.Born a British subject, just like a community organizer we all know (and wish we didn't).She assimilated.Became an *American* (and was proud to do so).

But there are plenty of "immigrants" to be found in Beverley Hills.Landscapers...nannies.Of course they're only allowed to be there during daylight hours.

“more than 800,000 of them now — who have become teachers, analysts, students, bankers and artists?”

It’s really amazing that the Dreamers have all turned out so well. No wonder Pelosi thanks their parents for bringing them here. Nearly a million teachers, analysts, students, bankers and artists we’d otherwise not have.

Hollywood the guardian of diversity outrageously spent many years turning Italian Americans into the mobster class while they overlooked others.

those yearning to breathe free

Jola Senorita Castillo, yo homeys can "breathe free" anytime they want to by simply walking past the guard at the Nogales crossing right back into Mexico.

We assume you're talking about Mexicans illegally in the US since we know you don't give a rat's butt about anyone else.

As for weepy movies about Los Pobrecitos, who do you plan to have see them? White Anglo-Saxons frog marched into the theaters at gun point so they can be culturally sensitized as to the evil of not wanting to be ruled by a thug population bent on domination of those they can't compete with?

Viewership will probably rank right up there with Heaven's Gate.

Difficult to pin down an actual time frame her but let us be generous and say from the beginning of Hollywood to the Great Depression. In those years there were few illegal immigrants as Mexican workers frequently returned home to Mexico and were not really considered immigrants as such. Immigrants from Europe had to be vetted and examined and some were turned away at the border. Asians did have discriminatory limits as the "Yellow Peril" was an ongoing meme. The ones that did make it were still legal.

As usual, the New York Times puts up a straw man and then asks why we don't treat him as a human being. Gee, maybe because he isn't the Scarecrow from OZ and the Times is beating its tin drum?

And again, not undocumented immigrants, they are illegal aliens. Need to take back the language that the left keeps pushing.

We need more movies about holy, adorable, sad, photogenic illegal aliens to show how special they are and how they BELONG wherever they want to be!

Unless they want to be inside my $22 million property in the Hollywood Hills where I will use my movie money to hire enough security to keep them the hell off my land....
