New Jersey has gotten another extension to bring its driver's licenses up to federal standards. The one-year reprieve means New Jersey residents can continue to use their driver's licenses for identification to board commercial aircraft until at least Oct. 10, 2018.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced Wednesday that New Jersey was one of 17 states to receive an extension to meet the requirements of the Real ID act.

Real ID establishes minimum security standards for license issuance and production and prohibits federal agencies from accepting for certain purposes driver's licenses and identification cards from states not meeting the act's minimum standards.

More years of extension. No drop Dead date in sight. Feds need to announce where a state is lacking. State DMVs need to explain the delay.

No need to comply with any Federal regs. They just push the deadline back every time.

I always use my driver's license as ID to get through security checkpoints at airports.

Is there something wrong with that? Do we need more regulations now?

I can’t get into the site due to my adblocker. Any details on how NJ drivers licenses fail to meet Real ID requirements?

The act established minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses. Under the law, state driver’s licenses and ID cards have to be issued only to people who can prove they are legally living in the United States. If state licenses don’t meet the standards, then federal agencies -– such as the TSA — will not accept them.
Despite all extensions, there is a hard deadline for states to require compliant REAL IDs: Oct. 1, 2020.

Missouri’s DLs are fully compliant except for one thing. MO chose not to provide the documentation needed to get the license to the Feds—the Mo Gen’l Assembly specifically wrote a law to prevent that. Recently the Gen’l Assembly has passed a law allowing the sharing if a citizen agrees to share his/her documentation with the Feds. Like NJ, MO has been granted an exemption for a bit longer. I have no idea of the “problem” the Feds have with NJ licenses.
