It's another headache for top Republicans in Mississippi and Washington as they game out the electoral implications of Cochran resigning before his seventh term ends in 2020.
Republican Gov. Phil Bryant would have 10 days to appoint a replacement, to serve until a nonpartisan special election was held to determine a permanent successor. If Cochran resigned before Nov. 6, the day of next year's midterms, the special would occur in 90 days. Most likely low turnout, an insurgent would have the advantage.
If Cochran resigned after Nov. 6, the nonpartisan special would be held the same day as the 2018 midterm, when Wicker also is on the ballot. The appointee would serve until then, and presumably have a leg up on the competition assuming this individual ran.

The GOPe establishment didnt get much for their money by keeping him did they?
Not to be picky, but ‘their money’?
The best news is either way the GOPe loses this time around. We know their game and it was laid out bare for all to see. They may have a boatload of money, but we have the message and new bigger megaphones!
David Brat showed the way, and our insurgency leaders of Obi-Wan KeBannon and Yoda Gorka will keep us on track.
I like this.
Maybe Chris McDaniel, who should be there instead of Cochran, could be named to fill in, then run w/o Haley Barbour and company colluding with the Dems and against Mississippi Conservatives again....
Chris McDaniel for Senate, please...
Another special election isn’t ideal (especially one that is “non-partisan” which could result into a RINO/Conservative runoff where the rats could elect the RINO in a runoff) but it’s better than have having a doddering old RINO porkmaster chairing the appropriations committee.
He’s not gonna resign though. When he goes it’ll be feet first.
If Wicker is smart, he would push for McDaniel to get the appointment so Wicker wouldn’t have to face him in the primary.
“...If Wicker is smart...”
That’s big IF.
Am I missing something? Has Cochran indicated that he’d like to resign? I know he’s out of it and drooling on himself, but he was doing that back in `14 when the RINOs stabbed us in the back. What’s so different now?
As far as I know, Cochran will “serve” until they put a toe tag on him.
Another toe tag?
The party ought to have a rule against backing old geezers in safe states. Nobody should start another senate term from a Red State over the age of 70 or, at latest, 72.
Part of the problem is that it is guys in their 60s with the most party power in red states, and if they don’t get in until then, there is no leveraging the power of incumbency for reelection without putting in a geezer.
It is sort of like putting an 80yo on the SC bench—a waste of opportunity.
Problem is, on occasion, there may be someone 70 that is better than someone younger. Strom Thurmond at 90 was still an effective Senator. Chuck Grassley is in his mid 80s and still effective.
