Pass Good Gun Laws and Prevent Bad Ones: Slow Down

How does the United States pass good gun laws and prevent bad ones? President Trump had the best response.

From washingtonexaminer.com:

“We'll talk about that later,” Trump told reporters at the White House when asked about gun reform Tuesday morning.

A nation has to have good laws if it is to survive and thrive. Since nations came into existence, it has become obvious that a ruling authority, or government, is necessary for people to survive and thrive. Without a ruling authority, force becomes the only law.

The strongest, the best with weapons, survive as long as they can fight, defend, or subjugate others. Mankind has painfully learned a central authority is necessary to reduce internal violence and to defend against external threats.

But, the government itself becomes a means to prey upon people, both internally and externally. The central dilemma of good government is to find a way to optimize the level of government power. Enough for internal peace (domestic tranquility) and to prevent invasion (provide for the common defense), but not so much as to become oppressive (secure the blessings of liberty) while promoting the general welfare.

The genius of the United States was in recognizing the dilemma and designing a system to accomplish those objectives.  Most governments in the world do not acknowledge the problem.

Democracy was an early approach to prevent government from becoming tyrannical. But democracies have severe disadvantages. One of these is that they are subject to emotional crises. Groups of people are subject to making, or of being convinced, in the heat of the moment, of doing things they never would do if they took the time to coolly consider the problem, or legislation to solve it.

Government is necessary.

Government is dangerous.

That is why we have checks and balances in the Constitution.

Don’t need any gun laws. They just need to enforce the fact murder is illegal. Then keep criminals in jails that don’t pamper them.

The Second Amendment has been quite helpful.

It might qualify as a “good gun law”.

Yup. The only good gun law is no gun law. No infringement.

Over use of the word “Democracy” takes away from all relevance in the article...

How would you replace the term “democracy”? Rule by majority vote?

Exactly. That's the fatal flaw in any and every "gun control" law. They are all predicated on the foolish belief that someone willing to commit murder - breaking multiple laws - will somehow be stopped or deterred by a "gun law." The sheer idiocy and delusion behind such thinking is breathtaking.

I mean, do they really think criminals are going to say "Well, failed my background check, guess I won't get that gun and ghost Jerome." Or "Imma bust a cap in your a... hold up, we're inside the city limits - I'll catch you later dawg." or "I want my 10 minutes of fame. I'm going to see if I can kill a few dozen people. So let me load up my legal capacity-limited magazines here...check...aw, damn, it's a gun free zone. Guess I'll go back to Mom's basement..."

So-called gun control laws do not improve public safety. In fact they provably have exactly the opposite effect. I believe their real purpose is twofold. They are an ongoing attempt to incrementally erode our rights leading to total civilian disarmament. (ie. police state) They also provide a very loud trumpet to sound providing a distraction to keep the sheep riled up and emotional - not thinking rationally about what their "leaders" are really doing.

A democracy is defined as majority rule, or mob rule. We officially have a representative republic. Unofficially and actually, we have rule by an anti-meritocracy.

There is only ONE meaningful gun law:

“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

All others are a violation of that law.

Possible good gun laws. Major criteria: little or no cost to the taxpayer; the encouragement of convenient and safe training; to promulgate free enterprise; and to insure safe and reliable supplies of guns and ammunition within the state.

1) Streamline laws for the creation of commercial underground gun ranges in industrial parks. This accomplishes several things. The parks are already zoned and protected against NIMBY complaints. They are far more convenient to municipalities than are rural outdoor ranges. By building say, underneath a warehouse, effective land use is doubled.

Training and qualifications for police, National Guard, academic gun clubs in schools, and “try before you buy” gun and accessory sales are made much easier. Such underground ranges could even have a safe quiet area for children, and a classroom for instruction. As well as maximum safety standards for clean air and lead recovery.

Of course this is not exclusive with establishing commercial or organizational firing ranges outdoors on state lands, for those who prefer that.

2) The promulgation of “state only” gun and ammunition manufacturers. This is done both to prevent federal interference using the Interstate Commerce Clause, and to encourage local business. Not just to create ornate guns to be used as rewards or awards, but to create state pride in unique guns and ammo exclusively made within the state.

It may eventually also be used to challenge the authority of the ATF and other federal agencies to interfere.

3) State awards and recognition, as well as encouragement to secondary schools to set up gun training, safety, maintenance and competition clubs. While there wouldn’t be any sanctioned academic gun use at earlier ages, gun training and safety could still be taught.

In any event, I think these are some ‘sensible’ gun laws that might be considered.

"Streamline laws for the creation of commercial underground gun ranges in industrial parks."

Why underground?? I would think "indoor" would be sufficient, and a lot cheaper to build.

YEP. 1) Deal with violent criminals as quickly and violently as they dealt their victims. That means killing them at sundown after a fair trial.
2) Keep criminals in jail. No plea bargaining, no parole, no probation for felonies.
3) No criminal gets out of jail without a GED and TWO trade skills.
4) Keep the mentally ill locked up and segregated from society. Build crazy camps if you have to.
5) Stop ALL welfare. Yep. Every single cent. Let the churches fill the gaps. The only people that should get money are Veterans.

Representative Democratic Republic works better than “Democracy” - for me anyway.

1. Violent felons aren’t allowed to own guns. Cops get the one in your pants without removing sensitive parts? 10 years, no parole.
2. Convicted drug user? See number 1.
3. That’s all i can think of that would be effective. All other laws go away suddenly.

How does the United States pass good gun laws and prevent bad ones?

On December 15, 1791, we passed (adopted) the only gun law we need. How do we prevent bad gun laws? We honor the 1791 law.

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

I base these laws on conversations with police.
80% of all gun homicides are gang related.
Most victims have a rap sheets that are robust with felonies being the highlight.
