Hours after moving to reclaim control of the northern city of Kirkuk, Iraqi government forces said Monday that they had reached the outskirts of the city, seizing oil fields and other important sites from Kurdish forces that had held the territory since 2014.
The quick advance pitted one American-trained military force against another. Iraqi government troops and the Kurdish forces, known as pesh merga, are both part of the American-led coalition battling the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL.

Kirkuk is a major center of Iraqi oil production.
The Kurds did the heavy fighting against ISIS and inflicted heavy causalities on the barbaric jihadists. They are disciplined, smart and know how to fight. The Iraqi Shi’ite militias and the Iranians will be badly bloodied in this fight. This fight underscores the perpetual byzantine conflicts in the Mideast. US entanglement there does nothing for the security of the American people. No more brave young Americans or material treasure should be sacrificed in this quagmire.

I was observing the threads here at FR during the debates on whether to take down Saddam Hussein or not (circa 2003), THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF FReepers were IN SUPPORT of GW Bush’s plan.
Interesting to see how many here are now regretting what happened.
Many of us were opposed to the invasion of Iraq from the start. I’m probably one of the few who is still left here. The rest were either banished or left on their own.
