It appears that the Social Democrats have finished first, but it also appears they and the Greens will fall short of a majority of seats in the state government. Again, it appears that the Christian Democrats, Free Democrats and Alternative for Germany will have a majority of seats. This could make for interesting post-election negotiations.

The Free Democrats kinda hinted that they won’t be a partner in the coalition. For the SPD/Green deal to work....they’d need at least one more percent in votes to be found (just not going to happen) between the two of them.

So in the end, the SPD will have a junior partner in the CDU.

On the CDU’s part, pretty harsh deal...they were thought to be 7 points ahead there a month ago. There are two state elections in the spring of 2018 (Hessen and Bavaria). If the CDU were to lose four to five points (yet still winning), there would be a meeting in Berlin and look at retiring Merkel by the end of 2018 and finding some new figure for the party.
