Anyone who has accidently sent a text message to the wrong person might have some sympathy with a member of the French intelligent services who landed himself in trouble with his bosses this week.

The man, who works for the central territorial intelligence services (SCRT) had been keeping tabs on a suspected Islamist extremist. He wanted to send a text containing important intelligence on his target to a colleague. But the spy got all his phone numbers mixed up and accidentally sent it to the very suspect he had been closely monitoring.

The “target” was reportedly quick to respond to the message, reminding the spy of how incompetent he had been. And to make matters worse, he was able to warn those he had been contact with that they too were probably being listened to. […]

The man under surveillance was suspected of preaching an extremist version of Islam in the greater Paris region of Ile-de-France. …

That’s the same way some intel puke single-handedly and with a SINGLE email got the ENTIRE humint team working for Uncle Sugar IN IRAN rolled up and horribly KILLED:

He performed a “reply to all” email. Yeah, they were on a pooled email distribution list; you’d simpy chose the one you wanted.

That does sound incredible, and that’s a story from about 13 years or more ago. I don’t know how long that system worked, but obviously thins were later changed.

There was more to the story:

After all our contacts suddenly went dark, the Iranians made a sudden invitation to some guy of ours, a tour of some Iranian facility.

In the course of this trumped-up tour event in the distance our guy heard SCREAMING. The tour proceeded as casually as before, the Iranian guide taking no perceptible notice, meanwhile the screaming was getting louder and louder as they approached it’s origin.

They passed by some wall of the facility and into direct view came the scene:

A bunch of Iranian guys hung FROM THEIR BALLS, all screaming.

And the actual purpose of the tour was to SHOW our guy saw WHAT HAPPENS to Iranians recruited to spy for the USA —presumably the Iranians wished for this message to get passed up the US command chain.

And for many years —POOF..!— that was the end of US HumInt inside of Iran.

That’s the story, anyway.
