Almost all the murders occur in three or four neighborhoods. My old neighborhood on the NW side was as safe as a small town. Our sons were raised there without incident.
However, anyone visiting would do well to avoid areas such as Austin and that includes any black visitors.
Other than that the city is a treasure with something everyone can enjoy. The music here is the tops, none better anywhere. How many can enjoy something as fabulous as the Monteverdi “Orfio” I had the good fortune to see last night?
The food is spectacular includes Italian, Mexican, Chinese, Thai and any other cuisine you would want. After the opera it was to Greektown for a feast.
By worldly standards, yes Chicago is probaly “safer” than alot of cities around the world. But by American standards, its dangerous.
If Mexico City is “safer” than all but six American cities, why are so many Mexicans fleeing to the US instead of to Mexico City?
As the mayor of Washington DC once said, if you ignore the murders, the City is a safe place.

After 17 years in an Asian-Nisqually-white farm community south of Seattle and 50+ years in Chicagoland and now 4+ years in Atlanta, the fact that Chicagoland is so much more segregated than the other two is unavoidable.
Boss Madigan has managed to maintain that which made Mayor Daley so great in the eyes of establishment Democrats. Madigan has been able to con the Black Democrats into favoring a segregation that is separate and definitely not equal.
There are several distinct Chicagos. Madigan’s bungalow Chicago is a totally different city than the city where the shootings occur. And each of those cities is totally different from tourist Chicago.
Separate and definitely not equal.
