Chicago earns high global ranking as a ‘safe’ city — and here’s why

Despite Chicago’s alarming, if select, murder statistics and routine singling out by President Donald Trump for gun violence, this lakeside metropolis was just ranked one of the safest cities in the world.

The Economist Intelligence Unit, a London-based research firm affiliated with the Economist magazine, named Chicago to its 2017 Safe Cities Index, issued Thursday — one of only three U.S. cities to crack the top 20 — largely based on advances in digital security.

Chicago, at 19th safest, narrowly trailed the other top-20 U.S. representatives, San Francisco at 15th and Los Angles at 18th. Tokyo, Singapore and Osaka topped the overall list, an order that has remained unchanged since 2015. Buenos Aires was the only city in the so-called developing world in the top half of the index.

I should have specified “reasonably-priced” and “throughout the neighborhoods”

The survey is crap. DC is the 11th most VIOLENT city in the US, and the survey shows it as the 23rd SAFEST in the world. San Francisco is the 32nd most violent city in the US, and the survey shows it as the 15th safest in the world. San Diego (68th most violent in the US) is roughly twice as safe as San Francisco, yet it isn’t even on the list.

My property tax has been in the 4-5000 range for a beautiful, spacious house. Suburban PT are higher and the Republicans run most of those.

We pay:
1)sales taxes;
2) liquor taxes;
3) income taxes;

Offsetting these are relatively low housing costs.

You don’t get everything but the Machine controlling the city has not stopped me from getting all I wanted from living there.

If Mexico City is “safer” than all but six American cities, why are so many Mexicans fleeing to the US instead of to Mexico City?

That is not true for the vast majority of the neighborshoods in the city. Mine was safer than “American Standards”.

As the mayor of Washington DC once said, if you ignore the murders, the City is a safe place.

I’ll bet the 500 (so far) dead this year, not to mention the thousands wounded, would beg to differ.

It’s not even ON the list! The third largest city in Canada isn’t rated on a list of “safe” cities. LMAO

No clue as to what they're ranking, but Chicago's and Cook County's populations are so large that the murder rate per 1000 residents is lower than many other places around the country.

Even though Chicago has more murders each year than Los Angeles and New York put together, the city’s per capita homicide rate is half St. Louis’ rate. Chicago also falls well behind cities like New Orleans, Baltimore and Detroit. Source

Chicago: More People Killed Than NYC and LA Put Together, But Still Twice As Safe As St.L.

Getting the Gang Warfare under control is the biggest problem facing the City and that is the source of the vast majority of the killings.

We now have Concealed Carry laws. But the greatest protection is between the ears.

Maybe because the inundation from the countryside fleeing to the city has squeeze them out. Mexico City has experienced dramatic and unsustainable population growth Over the last several decades. It may be the largest city in the world.

St. Louis City proper is a wasteland. Even the nicer areas inside the city borders are going downhill- the governor’s wife was mugged in the Central West End (the nicest part of the city) last year. The surrounding county on the other hand is mostly fine, especially the west and south county.

The city statistics are skewed because the city’s legal borders were locked in the early 20th century and unlike other cities it could not expand geographically as people fled outward. What is left there is a rump population of the most impoverished and dependent people from the whole metro area. Talking about St. Louis City per capita crime is like talking about Chicago per capita crime while only counting the population of the worst neighborhoods.

It’s true out of the 500 + murders in the city this year only 15 victims were white or Asian. There’s almost a million whites in the city

Safe for corporations against natural disasters? (Little chance of flooding, hurricane, earthquake, volcano, tornado?)

Generally downtown Chicago is pretty safe. Just don’t go across the freeway.
