One year, the foundation listed his compensation as $55,392. All the while, he was making $180,000, either in the form of cash or accruing debt.

This is insane. I don't have the cash and you don't have the cash, but it's reportable compensation?? What, so the IRS can get their cut on money no one has?

If my salary is one million dollars a year but because the company is going through financial hardship you only pay me five dollars then my salary is five dollars.

If you promise to pay me the $999,995 dollars when you can my salary is still only $5 until you pay it.
