One possibility might be to purchase a small plastic foldable step. You could store it flat in the vehicle and use it when you need to lift items onto the roof of the Jeep.

You need something like this.

Easier lift into the lower cradle, then you slide it up and lock it in place on the roof. You may need a step stool for that second part, but it's not a big deal.
