Very pretty writing.

I’m sure Erdogan regards it as a compliment, however. And I’m sure 99% of Turks would reject the notion that Ataturk “founded” Turkey in any meaningful sense.

Not my take. I think it is a take-off point to emphasize the criticism of Erdogan the Islamist’s actions.

Saying, he arrived at a moment when he could have made Turkey better, but squandered that opportunity.

But I do see your point and did not think of that when I read it.

It is a very accurate description of what he has actually done. Great Damage to Turkey, the region and to the relationship between Turkey and NATO and the US. And to relations with the EU.

Really? That many Turks are prepared to see their secular society overthrown so they can live under Sharia?

Yes, eastern Anatolian Turkey is a dismal place where strict Islam rules. But if Sharia ever threatens to overrun the rest of the country, there will be civil war.

Erdogan is a legend in his own mind. He wishes he had 1/10th the charisma and popularity of Kemal Ataturk.

The Ataturk mausoleum in Ankara is a national shrine.
