Las Vegas Strip shooter targeted aviation fuel tanks, source says

Las Vegas Strip mass murderer Stephen Paddock used his Mandalay Bay hotel room to spray massive aviation fuel tanks with bullets Sunday night, a knowledgeable source told the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The bullets left holes, but did not penetrate the two circular white tanks, sparing the nearby Route 91 Harvest country music festival from a potentially massive explosion, the source said Wednesday.

The tanks are roughly 1,100 feet from the concert site, where Paddock killed 58 people and wounded almost 500.

This is one angle of the story that makes the guy’s plan seem amateurish. I don’t know anyone over the age of 8 who would even think that a bullet would penetrate the exterior of a fuel tank like that.

Damage to tanks and spent bullets

The town I grew up in had a huge water tank at ground level. One day I was at a red light and a car comes screaming around the curve, jumps the curb, crashes through the fence and rams the tank. He hit a support strut and besides a good dent didn’t do much damage. I was watching and wondering how much fun surfing in the car would be.

Back on topic: good to know that bullets don’t damage the tanks and I wonder if it would be different if he’d used tracers. (I know very little about tracers so my ignorance may be on full display.)

200 rounds through the walls?

How many rounds at these tanks?

Add up and compare to audio.

Probably fake news to distract the fact that a conservative crowd was targeted.

A 300 Win Mag or 338 Lapua would but it would just cause a leak and no explosion. Perhaps even a minor fire.

This is precisely why gun control will never stop mass murder events. If I really just wanted to kill lots of people... Trust me on this, I wouldn’t need lots of guns. I could make the list, but I don’t want to give anyone any ideas here.

Jet fuel is basically kerosene, good luck setting it off with any small arms round.

I believe these tanks are double walled, so holes in the outer wall are no problem.

The worst that could happen would be a leak and a fire, there would be no explosion.

I know the bump stock causes severe inaccuracy, but not to this extent.

The bullets that hit the tanks were aimed there.

And it would have been sufficient diversion to enable his escape.

I’ll bet he didn’t target them. With only two hits, they were ricochets. That is why one did not penetrate the tank.

"The bullets left holes, but did not penetrate the two circular white tanks"

Just as a definitional matter, I would think "hole" implies penetration and puncture. If there was not penetration all the way through the metal I would call it a "dent" not a "hole."

“I don’t know anyone over the age of 8 who would even think that a bullet would penetrate the exterior of a fuel tank like that”

Depends on caliber, bullet weight and velocity at impact.

A .308 at 30ft might get through...a .338 Lupua at 30 ft most certainly would.

5.56 at 700yds would barely pass through a bean can.

Here’s another view of the fuel tanks from the room, approx. 4:00 mark.

“no explosion”

If there’s air in a 1/4 full fuel tank that big, the explosion would be huge. Really friggin’ big.
