I wonder what part secularism and same-sex-marriage had in this. I’ve read the place is pretty conservative.Increasingly Islamic as well. When I was in Barcelona in June I was struck how many Moslems, and groups of North African men, I saw. Something I hadn't appreciated in previous visits.

Its not.
Its the most left-wing part of Spain, except out in the country villages. But the vast majority of it is very left.
