Steve Scalise: Being shot in the hip 'fortified' Second Amendment stance

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., who was shot at Republican baseball practice during the summer in Alexandria, Va., said that his experience has only solidified his views concerning gun control.

"Inevitably questions about the Second Amendment are raised by what happened in Las Vegas," Fox News' Martha MacCallum said in an interview Tuesday, referring to the mass shooting there Sunday night. "It happens almost immediately. Have you, your experience of your own and what you saw in Las Vegas, has it changed how you feel about any of that?"

"I think it's fortified it because first of all you've got to recognize that when there's a tragedy like this, the first thing we should be thinking about is praying for the people who were injured and doing whatever we can to help them, to help law enforcement," Scalise said. "We shouldn't first be thinking of promoting our political agenda."

Scalise has an A-plus rating from the National Rifle Association for his support of gun rights, according to his website.

Scalise was shot in the hip when a gunman opened fire on a group of Republicans practicing for the Congressional Baseball Game in June. Following the shooting, numerous surgeries were performed on Scalise and during his recovery he had to relearn how to walk.

Scalise returned to Congress for the first time last week since the incident.

In response to this weekend's mass shooting in Las Vegas, which took the lives of 59 people and injured more than 500, Scalise encouraged people to donate blood to help victims.

"In this tragic moment, I encourage people across America to stand together in solidarity, and to support the Las Vegas community and all of those affected, especially by giving blood and encouraging others to do the same. In the face of unspeakable evil, our whole nation must respond with countless acts of kindness, warmth and generosity," Scalise said in a statement.

The gunman, 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, opened fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel Sunday night upon concertgoers at the Route 91 Harvest country music festival. He was later found dead in his hotel room by law enforcement.

Yup. Saw Martha trying to get Steve say anything negative and he wouldn’t bite. Hooray for Mr. Scalise. Louisianans should be proud.

Scalise was on point, but Martha kept hammering for the answer she wanted. “Yeah, I hear you, but what about the fact that...”

Airhead.

Absolutely. I’m very gratified he didn’t play into the media narrative on this type of tragedy.

He of all people can relate how much they were sitting ducks that day, and if not for some brave protective detail members, a LOT of the Republican Congress would’ve been killed. Enough reason for a strong 2nd Amendment.

There might be some hope for Scalise.

But, you cannot lead GOPee in a good direction. They don't follow worth a damn, even if for their own good.
