It was a disaster in slow motion. Those people REALLY thought the National Guard was there to clean their house, repair their roof, stock their pantry, pay them for sitting on the porch. It was really, REALLY pathetic.
As far as helping "them" (the entitlement class), a lifetime of conditioning to be a sheep cannot be reversed by your mercies. Only the crucible of disaster will purify or destroy them....and when it gets bad, really bad, THEY will turn on you. THEY will be the cannibal army in books such as "the road" and "lucifer's hammer".

The people on that island are going to have to step up and help themselves. I have seen pictures od 10,000 shipping containers of supplies sitting on the docks waiting to be used.
