Back in the day, I was at the Officers Club at Fort Devens, Massachusetts. My next door neighbor was special forces and his duty assignment was Norway. When the balloon went up, he was going to organize the resistance there. Sorry to inform you, but we thought we'd take a shellacking if the balloon went up but thought we could slow down the bastards enough so that follow-on forces could turn things around.

So, like I said, we were at the O Club, catching a fight, I think George Foreman versus Ken Norton. We're having a few beers, and I said to him how are you going to organize the resistance. You're black. He joked, he said he'd say he was from southern Norway. Sure, I said. Be real. Then he reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a pocket Constitution. He said he'd go anywhere to defend this. Like I said, we were having a few beers.

Now they've opened a freeking road between Russia and Norway! What chance do we have?

That’s the first time I’ve seen yellow striping separating opposite direction traffic. Although I’m not sure why there is long yellow striping and short yellow striping side by side in some areas of the road. I’ve always found the white striping in other parts of Europe to be confusing.

Which means that the Russians can save gas and wear by using tank transporters instead of having to drive the tanks all the way to Norway.

I’m getting too old. The Russians sent a Metropolitan (bishop) to bless the bridge opening. If something similar happened in the USA, all we would hear is whining.

I was over in Norway visiting relatives in 1979. I asked one of them on how they felt about having a border with the Soviets.

“How do I feel?”
“Yes - doesn’t it bother you that you are so close to the Soviets?”
“Why? We’ve had that border forever - never had a problem. It’s the damn Germans that we are concerned about.” (34 years after the war ended!)

He was serious. Another relative went to his grave with his secrets from fighting in the Norwegian Resistance. My dad asked him once what he had done. The guy looked around and whispered “No one knows - not even my family. They never will. There are still Nazis.”
