The Supreme Court Will Probably Strike a Huge Blow to Public-Sector Unions

The Supreme Court has announced that it will hear the case Janus v. AFSCME. It will likely prove to be one of the most consequential labor-law cases in U.S. history. At issue is whether public-sector workers can be forced to join or pay fees to a union as a condition of employment. Traditionally, labor unions in America — in both the public and private sectors — have been the “exclusive representatives” of the “bargaining units” that elected them. Essentially, union contracts cover every single worker in the “unit,” whether the worker wants anything to do with the union or not. This in turn leads to a dilemma: If workers don’t have to join or otherwise support the union, non-members essentially free-ride off the union’s efforts. If they do, they’re being coerced into offering financial support for an inherently political organization as a condition of employment — which is especially troubling when the employer is the government.

With Scalias death the court was tied last time it heard this case.

If the last time it was 4-4 without Gorsuch, I can’t WAIT for them to hear this one.

Oooo! I’ve been waiting for this one. Wisconsin has done a LOT of Union Busting since Governor Walker came to town.

When people are given a CHOICE, they opt OUT of Unions, which we saw up close and personal under Wisconsin’s Act 10. It’ll be interesting to see what the Government Drone-types will do outside of our state if this passes SCOTUS.

Full disclosure: I’ve been both a State and Federal worker bee. I was never approached by a Union rep in either job.

My father was in a Federal employees' union. He distrusted the traveling, fat-cat union reps and was opposed on philosophical grounds as well: The taxpayers pay Federal unions to pay lavish salaries to union bosses, bargain against us, threaten us, discriminate against white, male employees, and divert our money (our family's wages) to Communists.

In short, he hated the SOBs.

Having to be forced to pay an organization as part of the contract to work for a company, is wrong. It is effectively government forced extortion since the government has the power through the threat of legal action, to enforce the mandatory payment to a Union by a worker.

Right-to-work must prevail.

I can’t wait to hear public employee union leadership squeal when they’re shot down.

By the way, I've heard that the only thing upholding Federal employee unions is an executive order of JFK's, which can be eliminated by a stroke of another President's pen.

I've further read that unionization is the only thing making non-political employees un-fireable.

Are these things true?

If the Supreme Court strikes down these mandatory public union laws, I’m sure the 9th circuit will be more than happy to rule that decision unconstitutional.

When I was a youngster in school, they told us that monopolies were bad, and competition was good, and it all made perfect sense. Fast forward to today, labor unions are simply labor monopolies run by the left, and as such, have all the detrimental effects that implies.

Kennedy’s most lasting destruction of the Republic was declaring that public servants could be unions... Nixon didn’t help the cause either.

I will believe it when I see it. All Americans know that public sector unions are no good. It’s the fox guarding the henhouse. Would love to see them crushed.
