On Tuesday, Republican Maine Gov. Paul LePage warned his states sheriffs that hell fire anyone who defies his order to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement officials.
In a letter to Maines sheriffs, LePage explicitly threatened to remove any sheriff who refuses to comply with Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) requests to extend the detention of arrested individuals suspected of violating federal immigration law.
The governors letter was prompted by rouge sheriffs who have said they wont comply with ICE requests, The Daily Caller reports:
The letter, which references LePages authority to dismiss Sheriffs who defy his orders, appears to be directed at Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce. Joyce informed ICE in a Sept. 14 letter that he would not comply with requests to detain arrested individuals beyond their scheduled release date, absent a warrant.
We have a couple sheriffs who say theyre not going to be working with ICE, LePage told [Radio Host Laura] Ingraham. Well, unbeknownst to them, the Maine Constitution says if they dont follow state law, that I can remove them. So theres likelihood youre going to be hearing some stories about sheriffs being removed from their duties.
I’d prefer my sheriffs to wear no make-up at all, even if it’s only a little rouge.
It’s nice to have a Republican governor. Too bad we don’t have one here in MA.
“The governors letter was prompted by rouge sheriffs...”
I hate rouge sheriffs.
Howie Carr, while chatting with the Me. governator, told him he’d be happy to see a Governator remove Sheriffs as at least a novelty.
“I hate rouge sheriffs.”
You racist rogue!
I’d fire a “rouge sheriff” too-as well as a “rogue sheriff”...-
The typos in so many articles are a great source of amusement-apparently proofreading is no longer required...
I don't trust the plain old "republican" brand anymore.
In my State county sheriffs are elected officials and are actually empowered more than local police or the State Highway Patrol. A county sheriff can arrest a sitting governor. Maybe in Maine they serve at the governor’s discretion. I like the sentiment, but his saying he’ll fire county officials sounds a little odd to me.
LePage is a refreshing breath of fresh air, what we USED to have in abundance as your principled elected official. I hope he stands strong.
Perhaps it's an indirect "firing" by having sheriffs' state law enforcement commission pulled.
Blusher would be even better.
Do Sheriffs work for the governor in Maine?
“LePage told [Radio Host Laura] Ingraham. Well, unbeknownst to them, the Maine Constitution says if they dont follow state law, that I can remove them.”
He says his power to dismiss them is in the Maine State Constitution.
Our sheriff can wear all of the makeup she wants.
“I ain’t afraid of no sheriff name of Bunny!”
“Yeah, but you haven’t met her deputies, *White Fang and Black Tooth.”

Just a touch of Dyslexia goes a long, long way.
Best of all the Governors now in office, by far! President Trump should consider offering him a cabinet position.
