Given the fact that Iraq is less than a century old, one of many British creations, I'm not sure why it's Iraqi Kurdistan. British Iraq being a creation of numerous former cultures, one of them the several millennia old Kurds/Corduenes. As an "entity" they seem to have governed themselves well for several decades. In a difficult part of the world. Why not support their independence. It will be their job to defend it. Which I suspect they'll be up to.
Mois? I support Kurd independence 100%, and only hope the movement spreads to Iran, Turkey, Syria and whatever parts of the former Soviet Union has Kurd enclaves. I’m a pan-non-Arabist, and also want independence for Balluchis, Akhwazis, Allawites, Zoroastrians, Bahais and eastern Christians. These are Israel’s potential allies, along with Greeks, Armenians, South Sudanese, and best of all, India. At the very least, it will chop up the Arab/Muslim sea into pieces. It’s called EMA (Eastern Minorities Alliance) and it’s coming on as surely as autumn follows summer, and spring follows winter. This Kurd referendum is yet another leaf falling from the Sunni/Arabian tree, and yet another bud of life after the storms and blizzards of the Arab Winter.
They want multiculturalism and self-determination for oppressed peoples? They’ll get more than they bargained for, these leftists.
