'These laws are telling people to either toe the line or get out of the marketplace'
The lawyers for the Christian owners of a Minnesota video-services company are firing back after a federal judge there called the couples efforts to limit their wedding work to heterosexual couples akin to a White Applicants Only sign.
Carl and Angel Larsen operate Telescope Media, a video business that the Larsens want to include wedding videos. But they have a problem in the recently amended Minnesota Human Rights Act, which forbids businesses to treat people differently based upon race, color, national origin, sex, disability (or) sexual orientation.
Violation of the Human Rights Act could result in fines as high as $25,000 per incident.
The Larsens launched a pre-emptive lawsuit that was rejected last week by federal Judge John Mannheim, who wrote that the effort by the Larsens to film weddings but decline requests to video same-sex ceremonies was akin to a White Applicants Only sign.
The Alliance Defending Freedom, or ADF, is representing the Larsens. Senior counsel Jonathan Scruggs told WND and Radio America that Judge Tunheims rationale is way off base.
That comparison is entirely false. The Larsens do not discriminate based on of any status, Scruggs explained. They are willing to serve all people, including people of all different sexual orientations. They just cant promote messages they disagree with and events they disagree with. Thats a common-sense distinction.
He said the judges disturbing language did not stop there.
The court acknowledged that this law was raising First Amendment concerns yet said that was only an incidental burden on the Larsens First Amendment rights, when they are compelled to create and promote videos of a same-sex wedding ceremony, Scruggs said.

Tell them you’re too booked for the date or on vacation. Nothing wrong in giving the cake decorator the day off.
‘Busy, have you tried Ahmed and Mohammed yet?’
What you think? - “on their foreheads”. Ideology.
What you do? -”on their right hands” - your actions.
I have been thinking about this for some time.
I see where this is going!
1933: The Nazi boycott of Jewish businesses in Germany begin
1933: law passed which restricted employment, Jews could not serve as teachers, professors, judges, or in other government positions.
1935: Nuremberg Laws” are passed; more stringent employment restrictions, such as Jewish actors, authors, and journalists
1939: banned Jews completely from public life (after the invasion of Poland)
Today:
- Diane Feinstein and other lawmakers place religion Christian test on judges.
- States force Christian businesses to close.
- Christians forced out of universities.
Yes. These business owners are being held hostage by their honesty. They could have a host of ways to exit a contract. I don’t think that things will ever change unless business owners are helped to stand up by legal societies. One should not have to lie to avoid being forced out of business.
If same sex couple want to marry then they should seek vendors that are comfortable with the concept rather than trying to ram their historically unpopular choices down the throats of vendors chosen because they are going to have moral conflicts. The whole practice is based on shaming and sidelining Christians.
I missed this in the timeline:
1938: Göring issued the Decree on the Exclusion of Jews from German Economic Life,” Jews were forbidden to own retail stores and workshops and to sell merchandise and services. Jewish businesses were confiscated by the state, closed, or transferred to “non-Jewish” ownership.
If they are a wedding video company who doesn't film gay weddings then doesn't that pretty much eliminate homosexuals from their "willing to serve" category?
“Mark of the beast?”
well, I am postmil. Most of that occurred during, around, 70 AD.
Think.
Why did Tim Allens “Last Man Standing” TV show get cancelled?
Can’t have those good conservative values based on Christianity to exist.
Nope. Cancel Tim Allens show.
How about James Woods?
How about any other Christian in Hollyweird. No job for you!
There are many articles similar to the following.

The lawyer is drawing the very distinction I’ve been saying...
There’s a difference between serving a person something you already have and serving an EVENT to which you disagree. You are discriminating against the EVENT, but are happy to make anything for other events for the same person.
I know a lot of FReepers feel all these laws are garbage. That said, even with them in place, free speech laws have covered this ground.
Jewish baker must bake a Nazi cake
Black baker must bake a KKK cake
Christian printer must print gay pride t-shirts
...it’s not about not serving a person, it’s the content that is objectionable. It is covered by compelled/coerced speech rulings.
methinks you're on to something.
Exactly.
It’s only a matter of time before white kids are beat up in school, white owned businesses have their windows smashed and white people are beaten in the streets.
