Tollway worker killed in hit-and-run crash along the Tri-State

Illinois State Police are looking for the driver of a semitrailer that struck and killed an Illinois tollway maintenance worker Monday afternoon.

The 48-year-old man, whose name has not been released, was picking up debris on the right shoulder of the southbound Tri-State Tollway (I-294) close to 127th Street in Alsip.

As he headed back to his vehicle just before 12:30 p.m., the semitrailer driver hit the worker and sideswiped his vehicle, an Illinois State Police spokesman said.

The driver did not stop.

The tollway "extends its deepest sympathy to his family and friends," officials said.

This is the first death of a tollway worker since April 2016, when a Berwyn father of four died after a beam fell on him during reconstruction of the Jane Addams Tollway (I-90) in Des Plaines.

I hope this S.O.B. is caught. Most truckers use the utmost courtesy and professionalism on the road, with some even flashing their 4-ways to thank people for letting them into a lane. Pukes like this guy just give them an undeserved bad name.

The article doesn’t say anything about the perp. Did they get the name on his truck, or his license number. Did anybody see who was driving? I guess none of that is news.

That’s a toll road, and there are cameras all over it. I would think they will be able to find out who did this.

They don’t call pulling doubles or triples wiggle wagons for nothing. Swerving to miss debris in the roadway can make that rear trailer like a whip and he might not have even felt or noticed he hit anything.

Apparently, he sideswiped the work vehicle as well. It would be hard not to notice that.

Ever drive an 18 wheeler? I have and on a bumpy road or in the case of pulling doubles or triples, very possible not to notice a side swipe by the rear trailer.

His guilty conscience will lead to a social media post within 48 hours.

I have been traveling a lot lately and cameras are EVERYWHERE. The truck will be found.

Secondly,there are some extremely dangerous truckers out there. Most are a class act and professional but some, as seen in this case, are a murderous hazard.

It has everything to do with it. Chicago is one of the worst areas in the country for discourteous driving. You ask anyone who has ever driven a truck and they'll tell you that.

Not really. If the rear ties of the trailer brushed up against it he might not have even felt it up in the cab.
