“plenty of fuel from the big rains this past season.”

That’s what I was thinking. I haven’t been wandering out in the scrub to see but with all that rain we got I figure there’s a lot of it.

300 homes are being evacuated along Green River. Sounds like precaution rather than imminent peril. They are parking their cars in the Ralph’s lot and walking back home...

There is no growth like post fire growth literally from the fertilizing ashes. And some plants here have seeds that require a high degree Fahrenheit even to sprout, meaning nature expected fire to keep things going.

With that said, we now have built into these dry hills and now we need to worry about neighborhoods and people.

'Tis true, and be it far from me to wag my finger at anyone who wants to live in such places. I completely understand their reasons for doing so.

That said, it's still heartbreaking to to witness them lose everything to these natoral forces.

So why do we hardly ever hear how these fires start, especially when the winds are ripe for devastation? Is it because the government is hiding terrorist actions?

Just before sunset, we noticed a haze in the air. The smell of burning was stronger at the top of the mountain than down below. Less wind now, but we can see a bit of ash on the breeze. I hope the winds stay calm - with 21” of rain this year, there’s one heck of a lot of brush 3-4’ tall for miles.

Sam Kinison was wrong, when he said “we have deserts in America.....we just don’t live in them (expletive)”.

When I was a kid my mom had friends up in Modjeska Canyon, and they and their neighbors all had sprinklers on their roofs.

I thought that was super cool, until it was explained why.

Pretty sure all those homes are gone now.

It’s not just money. It’s experience. A lot of the guys who fought all these fires over the years have retired. Hubby is one of them. He sits and watches the fires in our county on tv and says stuff like...I put that fire out 5 times. You draw a dozer line here, back fire there and go back to the station and have coffee. The new guys don’t know this stuff because they’ve never done it and almost 100% of the guys that have done it retired en masse so there’s no one with the experience to teach them.

In Anaheim Hills, fire depts from all over south and central ca already mobilized and ready SHOULD the winds shift. Wow. They are ready even though the fire would have to move 5 miles west and cross a freeway (the toll road).

Amazing. Prayers up for the fighters and residents.

“So why do we hardly ever hear how these fires start, especially when the winds are ripe for devastation? Is it because the government is hiding terrorist actions?”

Nah, it may just not be making the news outside of SoCal.

I haven’t heard of a suspected cause for this one yet but in the past we have had: homeless/illegals with campfires getting out of control; cigarettes tossed out of cars; a hot catalytic converter parked near the brush; kids with bottle rockets; downed power lines; someone welding near the brush. There’s all sorts of mundane causes that get these fires started.

Arson usually gives itself away because it will have multiple ignition sites. And we aren’t having any wind to speak of so this wouldn’t be the condition that a terrorist might be looking to exploit.

My pal in Corona has been sending me pics of the helicopters and DC-10 dropping retardant and water on the hills south of his neighborhood.

No huge dark brown smoke plume like there was- just a vague haze off to the east.

They’ve been sucking their water from your reservoir. Must be cool to see.

quick story from the PE:

Winds were pushing flames toward Irvine Lake, just north of Irvine in Orange County, but firefighters said they’d keep an eye on the breeze, in case it shifted.”

Look up “Modjeska Canyon” in an online map, and pick satellite view. I’m thinkn’ you’ll be surprised.

except that tens of thousands of years ago we didnt have tens of thousands of idiots running around smoking and committing arson around tens of thousands of homes ,......maybe they can use Brawndo to keep the brush from growing so fast because all the forests are gone and all thats left is weeds, yeah let it burn then blame it on “Global Warming” ....see what global warming did ? we tried to warn you flat earthers...LOL

yeah we were set up in a line of engines waiting on the far side of the freeway for it, thinking we would be going after spots when it suddenly gets dark in mid day and a hurricane of glowing coals and swirling hot gasses carried by 50 mph winds just blows by horizontal for about 10-15 minutes
