pulled over for speeding Friday night, and the officer found a handgun inside the vehicle???

Not to excuse this guy, but why would they be searching his car in the first place? Speeding is NOT Probable Cause to search a vehicle ANYWHERE! Either he gave them the OK or this whole case will be tossed for an Illegal Search.

Something is missing from the story

Knowing the arrogance of many pro athletes, it was probably out in the open on a seat or floor of the vehicle.

The gun may have been in plain sight. All I know about the subject, I learned from watching COPS (so take what I type with a grain of salt), but in general, people who go to the trouble of acquiring illegal stolen handguns are usually engaged in dangerous lifestyle choices that may require having a gun ‘at the ready’ in the front seat of a car.

Westbrooks, 26, was initially stopped for speeding on Interstate 5 in Kern County, said Adam Taylor, public information officer for the California Highway Patrol’s Buttonwillow division.

An officer observed a handgun inside the car, and a records check indicated the gun had been stolen in 2009, Taylor said. The gun also was loaded with 13 rounds of ammunition, Taylor said.
