“I did a grammar check and found that both “were” and “was” are correct.”
No. “One were” is not correct. Therefore, “no one were” is also wrong, as is “none were.”
I wouldn’t doubt that there are people who hold themselves out as authorities but don’t know any better, but they should.
It is one of those errors seen so often that it has come to seem normal, but it is, was, and will always be wrong, no matter how many drooling moron academitards say differently.
none of the STUDENTS, the object is students
The verb must agree with the subject of the sentence. The subject of a sentence can never be the object of a preposition. The subject of that sentence is not “students,” but “none.” You are asserting that “one were” is correct.
Take away the prepositional phrase. Your sentence would read "none was." Mine would be "none were."
Do your own research. You'll find differing opinions.
“But as my previous posts said, where the object of the “none” phrase is plural, the verb can be plural as well.”
Never. The verb must agree with the subject, not the object.
“Take away the prepositional phrase. Your sentence would read “none was.” Mine would be “none were.”
And “none were” is always incorrect.
“Do your own research. You’ll find differing opinions.”
I’m 66 years old. After scoring in the top one percent on the GRE and LSAT, I earned a very good living as a writer for over 20 years.
My research on this was complete in the 1970s. The “differing opinions” are wrong, plain and simple.
I'll continue to to use "none were." If you want to report me to the Grammar Gestapo, I'll march proudly to the scaffold.
By the way, I also made a living as a writer. Per the AP Stylebook:
Use a plural verb only if the sense is no two or no amount: None of the consultants agree on the same approach. None of the taxes have been paid.'[emphasis mine]
Thanks, I thot ‘none were’ was ok too.
“Per the AP Stylebook:”
I’d trust a wino on the street before I’d rely on those Xlinton-voting, cork soaking leftards.
Languages do change, but those fools have merely been codifying error and falsely claiming “change.”
This crap is global now:
