Both the U.S. Republican Party and the British Conservative Party had been dominated by moderates for several decades prior to the rise of Reagan and Thatcher. Eisenhower and Nixon were opposed to the Goldwater and Taft wings of the GOP and were generally aligned with the liberals of the Rockefeller wing of the party. Conservatives in power in post-World War II Britain did little to nothing to reverse the socialist measures such as nationalized health care or the shrinkage of British military power imposed by the Labour Party.
