FWIW, I have no idea of what would be asked in today’s confessional. As a matter of fact, I never had a priest try to extract information out of me during confession.
Likely too bored. Or asleep. Or both.
This is true, but if the confessor is inexperienced, or hasn’t been to confession in a while and doesn’t remember particulars, the priest may assist by giving examples of sin.
I know at least one priest who will walk down the list of the 10 commandments and provide some bullet point examples to help the confessor recall things that might have been forgotten, especially if the confessor is there after many years or decades being away.
It could be that the priest’s manner just wasn’t well suited to the age of the kids who was visiting him. The article describes the priest as possibly leading the confessor which would be problematic.

Priests generally don't "pry" into anything in confession; it's not cross-examination time.
Another possibility: he's just the next in an extremely long line of clergy who have been doing this to innocents for centuries.
