They can try all they want, but you can’t spin this to include Western, majority white, Christian states. We are the only ones to end slavery, yet we are the ones who get blamed for it. No guilt here. None.

Arab States 1%? Article slanted much?
They obviously don't count the millions of slaves in the US who are paid to not work.

There are LOTS of slaves in the United States. It’s called something else though - income taxes.

Many of those modern slaves have to mail substantial amounts of cash to the IRS by the 15th of April every year. Some have to do that four times per year.

It all depends how you defime slavery. Genesis 47:18-25 defines it in such a way that a total income tax equal to or exceding 20% of gross income qualifies.

I read an interesting article by a guy that lived in Seattle for quite awhile. His Filipino(?) mother had been given a slave/maid by her uncle for her wedding present. Her husband then got a good job in the U.S. and they brought her in posing as a visiting aunt or something. This was in the 1980’s or so!

She never spoke, served the kids good meals but forced to eat only rice in her room, worked all day long, never left the house, etc.

The young son grew up, dad died. He took his mom and the maid in to take care of his mom and his new family. Paid the maid, English lessons, I think got her a green card - made her a member of the family. When the mom died he said she was “free” and he would set her up with a place, etc. She didn't want to leave his family, so she stayed.

When she died he traveled back to her little village in the mountains in the Philippines with her ashes to be buried.

I'm guessing there might be hundreds or thousands of similar cases. Plus the thousands of "sex slaves" in the U.S. While often beginning due to their own poor choices, there are thousands of young girls in prostitution that can't escape once they are in it. I saw on a quick search some group claims an estimated 57,000 "slaves" in the USA. Counting prostitutes doing it against their will, I could see this number - although it seems a bit high. Or I'm just naive.

In addition to saying where they are, the article should disclose who it is that is owning them.

Income tax, sales tax, auto excise tax, property tax, taxes passed along through the purchase prices of goods and services...yeah, I'd say 20% is that little spot in the rearview mirror.

I read an interesting historical essay several months ago.

The author claimed that 75% of the world’s population lived under some form of slavery, serfdom, or contractual bondage in 1787, the year the USA Constitution was ratified.

It seems like a valid claim.

At least 80% of Russians were serfs. The American south was 50-50 slave and free. Latin America and the Caribbean were majority slave. Africa and the Middle East were at least 50-50 slave.

And when you consider that most “free” women of that era had no choice but to remain married to a cruel or abusive husband, 75% of the world living in “slavery” sounds like a pretty solid estimate.

Try 47% of “income” is taxed.

13% social security = 6.5% personal + 6.5% employer matching.

Gas taxes are 40%+ of each gallon. (Total of all governments involved).
7% sales tax on things bought in the county.
State and national income tax.
(No county income tax, see sales taxes.)
school district at 1200.00 per year on 96,000.00 income.
Medicare taxes.

I’ve understood for some time that about half of those working on Thai fishing trawlers are slaves.... gives one pause for thought when eating seafood.

Well stated. How can being forced to give up nearly half of your annual income not a form of slavery?

For the solid majority of economically productive people in the first world, that would seem to be the case. I doubt that it is true of everyone.

Arab States = 520,000 slaves?

Hard to believe that number. Is that all the women there are left in Islam country?
