Spain's Guardia Civil police have detained a senior Catalan official and raided regional government ministries involved in organizing a banned independence vote.

Tensions were already high before the arrest of Josep Maria Jove, secretary-general of the Catalan vice-presidency.

Catalan leaders are defying a court order to halt the vote, condemned by the Madrid government as illegal.

One official called for peaceful resistance to protect the buildings.

"The time has come-let's resist peacefully, let's come out and defend our institutions," the president of the Catalan National Assembly, Jordi Sanchez tweeted.

The economy, foreign affairs, and presidency buildings were all targeted early on Wednesday, 11 days before the referendum..........

Plenty of people are still alive whose parents either ran hit squads or were victims of them so I can see why it would still be fresh.

What you failed to mention, out of either ignorance or malice, is that both sides had 'hit squads...'

And it’s a darn good thing that Franco won.

Actually I didn't mention either.

Barcelona is the nicest city in Spain.
I don’t think Madrid is going to let them leave easily.
Seville is the 2nd nicest...IMHO

My grandfather fought in the Spanish civil war. My mother survived it. Understanding the first hand stories of what happened and personally knowing the tensions of these two regions - this is bad.

Perhaps not Franco bad as that was a civil war complete with air bombs. But, hopefully this won’t inspire ETA to do their share of damage.

Those in Barcelona do not consider themselves as part of Spain. Since all my mothers family still live in Spain, personally - I’d never visit Barcelona. Screw them.

Worked out well, Cameron may not have won a majority if not for the fear of having the SNP propping up a Labour government. And May would have lost if not for the seats she gained in Scotland. Doesn’t change the fact that the Tories have had a majority of seats outside Scotland since 2010.

Anyway. this is getting ugly in Spain.

This is what I explained to another poster who said that Spaniards were "obsessed" with the civil war. A lot of the people who fought in and were affected by the war are still alive. In the Franco era there were countries using the war as an excuse to test their newest weapons, most notably Germany and Italy. Technically it's still possible for outside countries to supply opposing factions with heavy weapons. Look at Syria. Realistically I don't see it happening and I've bet my future on it by putting down roots in Spain.

A politically correct clone of Tony Blair who proudly listed ‘gay marriage’ as an achievement when the YES vote on Brexit forced him to leave No. 10..........

A corporatist, globalist CINO........

I hope you are enjoying Spain. I came over to the states as a young girl. But, grew up with equal amount of Spanish culture.

One thing I love about Spain is it’s a great place for night owls! lol I love Italy so much as well. But, those folks shut down much too early for me.
