Nationalism without isolationism: Trump’s UN triumph
NY Post ^ | September 19, 2017 | Benny Avni

For 50 minutes on Tuesday, President Trump dazzled, and appalled, UN denizens in a speech that was the most detailed and reasoned defense to date of his “America First” ideology. The nationalism was still there, but any hint of isolationism was absent.

If “Rocket Man” Kim Jong-un refuses to end his missile and nuclear programs and keeps up his “suicide mission,” Trump said, and if countries fail to isolate him despite the UN’s own resolutions, America “will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea.”

And he didn’t shy away from attacking several other sacred cows of Turtle Bay. He chastised the UN bureaucracy and hinted America won’t continue blindly pouring cash into it. He asked other countries to shoulder more responsibility in maintaining global peace and prosperity.

And then there was this: The nuclear deal with Iran is “one of the worst and most one-sided transactions the United States has ever entered into,” Trump said. “Frankly, that deal is an embarrassment to the United States, and I don’t think you’ve heard the last of it — believe me.”

The usual suspects were appalled. “It was the wrong speech, at the wrong time, to the wrong audience,” Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom told the BBC.

In reality, it was a more-refined and a better-reasoned version of the worldview Trump’s been proclaiming since the campaign. It was a defense of the role national interests play in facilitating global cooperation. He talked about three principles — “sovereignty, security and prosperity.” But the speech might as well have been titled “sovereignty, sovereignty and sovereignty.” The word appeared in the speech 19 times. Trump also mentioned “patriotism” and, of course, he vowed, “As president of the United States, I will always put America first

Once again the Donald fires up his base and makes his detractors look small and weak. Not bad for a reality tv personality the MSM and swamp dwellers deem unfit for office. MAGA

If you simply read the text of the speech, and avoid having some pretender-journalist give their interpretation...it’s a remarkable speech. I would suspect that Nikki Haley helped to craft at least half of the speech.

I think as Rex retires out in two years as Sec of State...Haley will walk in and take the job, and line herself up as the right candidate after Trump.

I agree, i thought it was a great speech... IMO I think Trump needs to SPEAK more and tweet less.... he connects very well when he speaks...

It was a great speech, and the President delivered it VERY well. He had a lot to say and said it with conviction, clarity and reason. There was NO ambiguity or lack of resolve.

His delivery was steady, direct and articulate. What a refreshing change from the empty, laughable, sing-song hectoring we have had to endure for 8 years!

Trump was brilliant in his speech. He told the assembled bloviators that he expected THEM to live up to their own oft stated ideals viv a vis Rocket Man. And if somehow THEY were to fail welll.... He tossed the ball into their court.

“Haley will walk in and take the job, and line herself up as the right candidate after Trump.”

Haley is not a natural born citizen so she can’t be president, that is, if you want to abide by the Constitution.

She did not endorse Trump for president.

Stephen Miller wrote the speech.

While born in the US...her parents aren’t. Yet, Obama, along with Rubio, Jindal, and Cruz....also all fit the same situation. It would seem like we’ve already opened this can of worms and proceed forward.

Agreed that she didn’t endorse the President...but oddly enough, he gave her a four-star position and a chance to demonstrate her ability.

“he gave her a four-star position”

Ambassador to the UN is hardly a four-star position. It is for only those globalists who like to exalt the UN above nation-states.

When did ignoring the Constitution become merely opening a can of worms?

Next, will we puzzle over what “infringe” really means?

Semi-isolationism would not be a bad thing. Withdraw ALL foreign aid from everywhere and only restore it on a case-by-case basis where it provides a provable benefit to the U.S. Negate and renegotiate all existing treaties and alliances on the same basis. Finish the WALL. Stop all immigration and only resume it under those conditions. Expel all non-citizen Muslims and keep surveillance upon all citizen Muslims.

That’s a start.

There was an eight year precedent set for not abiding by the constitution.
