WASHINGTON - State Department officials briefed Senate staff on Friday on plans to cut up to $10 billion from the department’s budget over five years, but offered few specifics to ease concerns that the administration risked weakening U.S. standing in the world.

Many lawmakers, including some of Trump’s fellow Republicans, worry about his plans to slash the State Department budget to help boost military spending.

The Republican-led Senate Appropriations Committee issued a blistering report last week accompanying its spending plan for State, accusing the Trump administration of pursuing a “doctrine of retreat” on foreign policy.

At a news conference this week, Senator Lindsey Graham, the Republican chairman of the subcommittee that oversees State Department spending, spoke of his opposition to such cuts to diplomacy and foreign aid.

A start maybe. But EIGHTY PERCENT of the $4 federal government is unconstitutional and MUST be dismantled if we are going to recover our Free Constitutional Republic.

I know the Lying Left and the Light Left GOP have nothing like that in mind, but WE the People do, and with God’s help, WE will make it happen.

Trump has stated he may not make all the appointments his predecessors did. He views it as cutting the overall budget.

Can’t honestly imagine any of the last four presidents giving that type of consideration to the process.

Ditto that. 10% in five years? They best they can do is whittle down 2% a year. What pathetic and absolute BS. I thought Trump was going to bring some business discipline to the GD government. I’ve been in companies that shrank 25% overnight when things turned sour.

Maybe they could locate the $6 billion that they lost during Hillary’s time as SOS.

Met a Jewish women who retired from The State Dept. She was in the process of “coming out” as a Repub. She said it was a corrupt communist swamp.

I still want to know where our missing $6 billion went. The Clinton and Obama Foundations?

So cutting 10% from the normal government growth of 5% every year, equals 40% growth. Yippie.

I do remember Kissinger wanted to get rid of 1 or 2 thirds of the diplomats. It’s in Marvin Kalb’s book. Tillerson is working on it. I say keep him around.

...cut up to $10 billion from the department’s budget over five years

I think I'd prefer $10 billion every year for five years.

I can’t pin down the number of people employed by the State Department but I imagine it is a pretty high number. Considering there are only 193 countries in the world, most of which are not very important, we should be able to do with less employees.
