The Detroit Lions fan who posted racial epithets directed toward two other fans Sunday has agreed to give up his season tickets, according to the team, and wont be allowed back at Ford Field.
The fan whom the Lions have not identified posted a picture of an African-American woman named Stacey and another man on Snapchat. The post included profanity and racial slurs, calling them Ignorant [n-word] because they were sitting in their seats during the national anthem.

Is the Star Spangled Banner next on the chopping block?
O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
‘Tis the star-spangled banner, O long may it wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion,
A home and a country, should leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave,
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
O thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war’s desolation.
Blest with vict’ry and peace, may the Heav’n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: ‘In God is our trust.’
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
Additional Civil War period lyrics
In indignation over the start of the American Civil War, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. added a fifth stanza to the song in 1861, which appeared in songbooks of the era.
When our land is illumined with Liberty’s smile,
If a foe from within strike a blow at her glory,
Down, down with the traitor that dares to defile
The flag of her stars and the page of her story!
By the millions unchained who our birthright have gained,
We will keep her bright blazon forever unstained!
And the Star-Spangled Banner in triumph shall wave
While the land of the free is the home of the brave.
Alternative lyrics
In a version hand-written by Francis Scott Key in 1840, the third line reads “Whose bright stars and broad stripes, through the clouds of the fight”.
The “hireling and slave” bit more likely refers to British usage of mercenaries and pressed(conscripted) troops, rather than volunteers.
The 3rd stanza does not refer to killing slaves.
3rd stanza says there was a group that said Americans would lose war to British. Francis Scott Key pejoratively labels them hirelings & slaves of fear/Britain
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battles confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
Oer the land of the free and the home of the brave!
Yet any disrespect shown to a black or black “hero” is racism and will not be tolerated...
They can ban him for “behavior” I guess, but can they make him give up season tickets he paid for? Shouldn’t he be able to sell his tickets to someone else.
No I am not applauding his words.
While I do not defend his words, I think his property interest in the tickets he paid for should be respected, by allowing him to sell them - not just giving them up.
Freedom of expression is no longer allowed in the No For Long league.
That's the ultimate goal.
Just abandon the NFL.
They obviously do not to be the football league of this nation.
Taking pictures of people during the anthem isn’t exactly being respectful wither.
Something that Bothers me is people cheering during the anthem, sometimes during the “rockets’ red glare,” phrase or as they singer begins to finish, “oer the land of the free” is not a signal to begin whooping. Of course, this is less bothersome than people sitting during the anthem.
Since the Lions’ organization does not see fit to identify the fan, good bet she/he is a black. Or brown.
One thing is for sure the offending fan was not a straight white male.
But this is Detroit after all.
It would be great if a movement started whereby at ballgames, in fact all public events, instead of having some local notable sing the anthem, have some strong voice lead all spectators in singing. The mass volume of people singing has a powerful dynamic. Since many may not know the words have, them put on the screen.
This would be a good project for FR.
“...posted a picture of an African-American woman named Stacey and another man on Snapchat.”
I’m guessing, by the way that this is worded, that the woman named Stacey is actually a man.
> The hireling and slave bit more likely refers to British usage of mercenaries and pressed(conscripted) troops, rather than volunteers. <
The “hireling” was, as you say, a mercenary in the service of Britain. The “slave” was an escaped American slave fighting for the British in return for a promise of freedom. There were many such slaves on the British side.
The verse is just saying that those folks will be defeated once the battle starts. In no way does it celebrate slavery.
The Hessian mercenaries employed by the British literally were “hirelings”.
Yes.
In the revolutionary war that is true
