Amazon Web Services has a new market for its cloud computing, analytics, and storage services.

This week, the Defense Department granted the cloud computing giant a provisional authorization to host Impact Level 5 workloads, which are the military and Pentagon’s most sensitive, unclassified information.

“This further bolsters AWS as an industry leader in helping support the DoD’s critical mission in protecting our security,” the company said in a statement. “The AWS services support a variety of DoD workloads, including workloads containing sensitive controlled unclassified information and National Security Systems information.”

...the military and Pentagon’s most sensitive, unclassified information.

So something like troop movements and strategic contingency plans - whereas the classified information would be about transgender promotions and the generals' lunch dates with defense contractors? :)

Over all of the years that I dealt with highly sensitive data and information; this type of material was known as “Unclassified Of Possible Intelligence Value”.

It was unclassified but it could be combined with other unclassified information and publicly available information to form assessments, reports, etc that when brought together provided sensitive and possibly classified information.

Collection of this type of information was common practice among all nations and private companies as well.

This was the reason that Tom Clancy was contacted when his first book, Red Storm Rising, was released. I read it and immediately recognized information and scenarios that I was aware of through highly classified sources. Clancy had collected this information legally and through unclassified sources and had as any good analyst would have done made deductions about strategic and tactical scenarios that played out in the book.

The headline is misleading.

According to Hillary they could 5 years ago. A server in my bathroom was good enough and AWS is more secure than that. /sarc

It’s not just DoD. Amazon Web Services (AWS) is also hosting the Intelligence Community’s Commercial Cloud Services (C2S) secure cloud environment.

Headline: Amazon Web Services Can Now Host the Defense Department’s Most Sensitive Data

Article: This week, the Defense Department granted the cloud computing giant a provisional authorization to host Impact Level 5 workloads, which are the military and Pentagon’s most sensitive, unclassified information.

I just love it when the media lies with its headlines. I was imagining TS/SCI data on Amazon.

No. and No and No.

Note to Defense Department - make your own “cloud” AND SECURE IT FROM ALL OUTSIDE INTRUSION.

Wrong. Headline is correct.

From the story:
“Already, DoD is using AWS to host sensitive, mission-critical workloads, including the operational control system for the Global Positioning System. The provisional authorization allows military customers an easier route to use AWS for a variety of other IT services.”

There is no mention of personnel records or other HR crap in the story.

GPS control system on Amazon?
Ludicrous lapse of judgement on the part of DoD.

They do not have sufficient internal controls to ensure there will not be INTERNAL sabotage. At least 1/3 of their workers are foreign nationals without any security check.

And that includes people with “god” credentials.

All part of the 0bama plan. Classified material will consist of social justice data and SJW training programs and scores, all else will be moved to civilian server farms, clouds and such like as the US military moves into the modern age of social justice warfare, and away from too expensive actual warfare.
