To remove the vandalism, city crews power-washed
the Robert E. Lee monument in downtown Roanoke.
The Robert E. Lee monument across from the Roanoke municipal building was vandalized overnight with the message Rest in power Heather Heyer scrawled across the face of the obelisk in red paint, according to a Roanoke official.
Citing a police report, Assistant Roanoke City Manager Sherman Stovall said an employee of WSLS (Channel 10) noticed the vandalism and reported to police at 4:46 a.m. Thursday. Police arrived minutes later and contacted city maintenance workers.
By 9 a.m., city crews had power-washed the monument and were removing the caution tape around it.
Heyer is the young woman who was killed in Charlottesville in August when a car plowed through a crowd that was counter-protesting a rally being held by white nationalists who object to the citys removal of a Lee monument.
Since then, the call has escalated to remove monuments and memorials to Confederate war heroes.
A police report and comment from the city was not immediately available.
Thant would be “Vandalism.” Too quick on the keyboard. Sorry.
The spot where the statue is located is just across the street from the municipal building and is called “Lee Plaza.”
I used to go by there all the time and have been to a Memorial Day service or two there over the years, and somehow never realized that it was named in honor of Robert E. Lee.
