WELLINGTON (Reuters) - New Zealands Labour Party on Thursday promised no surprise new taxes until 2020 and improved its position as frontrunner in a national election, with a poll showing its support edging up, threatening the National Partys ten-year grip on power.

A shock poll released just a couple days ago is starting to look like an outlier poll. This new poll aligns with other recent polling indicating that Labour has an advantage over National of several point, and is poised to take the reigns of government from National, with support from the New Zealand Green Party. As of 6 to 8 weeks ago, these two polls and other polling information indicated that National enjoyed the advantage, and could be returned to government with support from New Zealand First.
What to make of it? Perhaps the only proper conclusion is that there is some uncertainty about the election. National has plotted a steady course forward, navigating earthquakes and other challenges, and now comes Labour offering pie in the sky under new, idealistic and young leadership. What could go wrong?
