Most Americans Want Government-Run Health Care Until They Find Out the Government Will Run It

Public support for single-payer health care is growing—in fact, a Kaiser Family Foundation poll in July found a majority of Americans support it—but that increase comes with an important caveat. Most Americans only want government-run health care until they find out that it means the government will run their health care.

I thought about that this morning while reading J.D. Tuccille's excellent piece asking, "Are You Sure You Want Medicare For All?" He walks through the various ways government-run health care seems to be appealing—it means families no longer have to bear the cost of heartbreaking medical disasters on their own, for example—and the far greater number of reasons why government-run health care would be a fiscal, political, and medical disaster:

They want FREE stuff from the Government, BUT they don't want the Government controlling in their lives! The Supreme Court has ruled on this in the past...you take Government money, you have to play by Government rules!

Of course, most people would say that thought process seems to an oxymoron!

In addition, most people would agree that thought process definitely falls under the "MORON" part!!

Single Payer = GOVERNMENT MONOPOLY HEALTHCARE

Hell no!

Oh, but it is. Once the government pays the bills, it will regulate the providers to ensure the bills are as small as possible.

The author is incorrect.

Americans want their cake, and they want to eat it too.

75% of all Americans will take you up on an offer of “free stuff” without asking a single question.

If your doctor can’t convince the VA board that your procedure will give you a better than 70% improvement rate, then your procedure is NOT approved - PERIOD! That “70% improvement” is the MINIMUM, to get an approval at the VA!

I couldn’t get the VA to complete a REQUIRED procedure (remove screws that were installed while on active duty); they were supposed to be removed within 13 months! I had to have my personal doctor remove them...several months after the “must be removed by” date!

“Why wouldnt every fine citizen of this great country want the exceptional health care that it lavishes upon its veterans?”

All my healthcare is VA and every American would be lucky to have it, I don’t care what the current coverage is.

My main facility is Mather, CA just outside Sacramento.

I needed some pre-surgical Pys Therapy for my knee so they set me up with the closest provider to my house: The Capitol Athletic Club. The gym of Judges, governors and Senators.

My actual knee replacement will be performed by the teaching physicians/surgeons from UC San Francisco. They are volunteers.

MRI’s are not rationed. All drugs and services are timely and free to me. Everyone I have encountered is good at what they do and gives a sh!t.

I don’t know how it could be better.

Honestly.

I’ve never met a man with a 50% or greater VA disability (Tier 1) with a single complaint on the VA.

The VA treats the Tier 1 very, very well.

Problem with that is that 90% of the people don’t know or relate to Amtrak because they’ve never used it.

“The question could also be do you trust the government to act in your best interest. What percentage of thinking person’s would say yes to that.”

Well that assumes that most people are thinking people, and you surely know better than that.

I want to rephrase my question so that it’s more to the point. Here it goes...

1. Do you trust politicians and bureaucrats?

After they answer that, you ask them...

2. Do you want them running your health care?

The reason I think this phrasing is better is because most welfare recipients and liberals view “government” as a benefactor, whereas most of them, like conservatives, don’t trust politicians and bureaucrats (which of course is who the government is, but because liberals and welfare recipients are non-thinking they don’t connect the two).

EXACTLY! They treat those with 50+% disability like royalty, but screw the rest of us disabled peons! I, as a lowly 40% disabled veteran, got screwed and they refused to do my surgery.

Just know that this is EXACTLY how ANY Government run healthcare solution will be conducted:
Those they deem “worthy” of help will get GREAT care!
Those they deem “unworthy” will get SCREWED!

I can only imagine the affirmative-action process that will automatically approve minorities (actually, any “protected” group) to get treatment before majorities! Of course, this will just create further divides in America...just what the Democrats want!

My daughter works at the VA in Wichita. The west is much more squared away. From Missouri east and down in FL its one horror story after another.

I am prepping for micro back surgery hopefully sooner rather than later. TriCare is being nice and agreeable so far.

What did you pay for that great coverage?

That was a part of the deal that has already been paid by us.

My doctor finally found an inhaler that will help with my cough. He gave me 3 samples and it was such a relief. Now that I want a prescription, medicare does not cover it. Bought privately, 3 of them - a months supply - is 325.00. My doctor is appealing an authorization but who knows, they probably still won’t cover it, I’m probably too old and not worth it.

60% Service Connected disability is the only price I paid.

And it is great coverage.

And, it has been much better since Trump...already! He IS delivering on this front. More timely, more polite, more thorough.

If the VA facility can’t get something done in a timely fashion, you’re referred to a Platinum level private service.

I’m surprised I don’t have a limo pick me up for my appointments.

Im caught up in the CPap industry. My last yearly appt with the doc, waiting in the room, checking out the fancy options and flashy advertising on a board full of about 30 different inhalers of all types. I figured one a month, you need 3. I bet the cheapest one cost $75, and yours at $325 probly isnt the most expensive one.

I tell all my doctors that the industrialization and media marketing on prescription products really makes them look like unethical snake-oil salesmen. I get some very peculiar looks from “medical professionals”.
