Their transition from mere criticism to direct-action violence has turned the trickle of turned-off people into a flood. As a rule people are used to and expect differences of opinion in civil discourse - when it's now a matter of life and death to disagree with an opposing position, that gets people's attention. Then when their heroes in politics and the entertainment sectors jumped in to support, refused to condemn or gave assent through silence, that made people even more uneasy as to who and what it is they are supporting and why.
