Stunning testimony: Voting machines can be hacked without a trace of evidence
Washington Times ^ | 9-12-17 | Steven Dinan

The country’s voting machines are susceptible to hacking, which could be done in a way so that it leaves no fingerprints, making it impossible to know whether the outcome was changed, computer experts told President Trump’s voter integrity commission Tuesday.

The testimony marked a departure for the commission, which was formed to look into fraud and barriers to voting, but which heard that a potentially greater threat to confidence in American elections is the chance for enemy actors to meddle.

“There’s no perfect security; there’s only degrees of insecurity,” said Ronald Rivest, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

He said hackers have myriad ways of attacking voting machines. “You don’t want to rest the election of the president on, ‘Maybe the Wi-Fi was turned on when it shouldn’t have been.’”

He and two other computer security experts said bar codes on ballots and smartphones in voting locations could give hackers a chance to rewrite results in ways that couldn’t be traceable, short of sampling of ballots or hand recounts — and those work only in cases where there is a paper trail.

Andrew Appel, a professor at Princeton University, said that it would be easy to write a program that cheats on election results and deletes evidence of the hack as soon as the results are reported.

But you have to understand human nature...
The union boss would ask members to show proof they voted “right”.
The low information folks would show they voted “right” for a cash payment.
etc.; etc.; etc.
Your thought is just a really bad idea.
How you vote has to remain a secret.

“There’s no perfect security; there’s only degrees of insecurity,” said Ronald Rivest, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Ronald Rivest is the "R" in the RSA encryption algorithm. He knows something about cryptography, as he was one of 3 that invented the entire field of public key cryptography.

I agree - as long as they can’t trace the ballot back to an individual.

If there is no guarantee that a ballot is secret, well, think about how well the “non-secret” ballot works for those opposing unions...

Your scheme doesn't address the reality of the kind of voting system attacks that matter, and creates some new possible attacks and essentially defeats the anonymity and privacy of the voting system. If you are able to take with you a copy of your ballot, which is what you are suggesting, and that copy is linked to your actual ballot, then in theory you can check to see if the ballot shown to you is the same as your receipt.

But of course then voters can be subjected to extortion, or coercion to vote a particular way. When your boss says "bring in your ballot receipt" what are you going to say? How about when it gets requested in a subpoena?

Also, how do you know that the ballot you see, say on some govt. server, matches the ballot that was actually counted? Any fraudulent voting system would simply show you a ballot that matched your receipt, but how would you know it was actually even counted, or if it was counted correctly?

Actual election integrity and security depends on the people involved, and procedures that the public can observe and ensure result in a fair and accurately tabulated election.

“Minimum 2 years jail time for anyone caught trying to rig an election”.

THAT SHOULD READ MINIMUM 10 YEARS AT HARD LABOR.

Rivest is a very smart guy who knows a lot about designing systems of the sort that can be used to make elections more secure. But sound bite testimony isn't helpful, even from guys like him.

He is well aware of how systems, including existing systems can be very accurate and hard to hack.

All that I am saying is I would like to punch in my ballot number and see if it reflects my votes. I could punch in any number before or after mine and see how someone else voted, but I wouldn’t know who they are.

Show my boss a receipt with the number cut off or tell him to drop dead. If my boss tells me to bring in my first born child and dress him or her like a clown, I'd tell him to get a subpoena. Just as silly.

Electronic voting that also has 2 copies printed out. One for the state and one for the voter. With name of person voting and photo. No one mails in votes except military. Also the voting machines would have an ink stamp. No photo id then no vote. Must register at least 2 months in advance or no voting.

Get rid of the damn computers! We should never have allowed them in our polling places. Sooner or later they’ll be used against us, guaranteed.

All that I am saying is I would like to punch in my ballot number and see if it reflects my votes. I could punch in any number before or after mine and see how someone else voted, but I wouldn’t know who they are.

A properly designed ballot number would look something like a Microsoft product activation code. Five groups of five letters and numbers, randomly generated. The total number of MS codes, ignoring letter case, is 36**25 = 808281277464764060643139600456536293376. Not quite the Eddington number, but far, far larger than any electorate.

In such a scheme, the chance that adding or subtracting one from your ballot number would yield someone else's ballot number is vanishingly small.

Of course, as others have pointed out, the problem with any such scheme is that it allows a voter to prove to a third party how he voted, thus enabling vote buying and selling and voter coercion.

Eliminate early voting. Tailor made for cheating.
Photo id required.
Caught cheating? Voting twice?
Ten years minimum per count consecutive sentences, not concurrent. No parole or reduction of sentence for any reason.

According to democrats that’s how Bush won in 2004. yawn.

Hillary won the pop vote because millions of illegals and dead people voted for her, no matter the method they used.

There is no validation of the vote. Once voting was turned over to computers the software makes the totals anything the beast wants it to be.

There is a system, Scantegrity, which allows a voter to check that his ballot was counted without revealing how he voted. Ronald Rivest, one of the experts quoted in the article, was on the team which developed it.

“...short of sampling of ballots or hand recounts — and those work only in cases where there is a paper trail...”

And that is the exact reason than any system that doesn't have a paper trail for later sampling/audit should not be allowed.

How you vote has to remain a secret.

Then fraud will remain. Deal with the people that break the law by threatening the voter not covering up for them.

And then there is the issue of “poorly” calibrated (seemingly always in the favor of the democrat candidate) touch screen units.

How many wrong votes get applied before a voter notices that he didn’t want to vote for the guy whom the machine selected for him?
