Mayor proposes nearly 9 percent property tax increase for storm damage
KTRK Houston ^ | 9-11-2017

Mayor Sylvester Turner will ask the Houston city council for a temporary tax hike of nearly 9 percent to help pay for Harvey relief.

The first item in the process to pass the increase will go in front of the city council Wednesday. The increase would be temporary, and would only be permitted to last for 12 months.

The current rate of 58.6 cents per $100 valuation would go up to 63.8 cents for 12 months since the request is considering an emergency, Mayor Turner's communication director Alan Bernstein said.

On an average home in Houston valued at $225,000, it would add about $117 a year, the city said. That would break down to about $10 a month for 12 months.

The city's cap on property tax wouldn't apply here because of the emergency declaration, but rates are currently the lowest since 1987, Bernstein said.

If approved, the move would bring in $110 million dollars. Homeowners would see it tacked on to their first bills of 2018.

“Temporary” only means 108 years.

That is the correct solution for living at sea level. I actually live above 3000 feet elevation. I really dont want to pay for other peoples hurricanes . Nobody pays me after storms. I totally endorse this tax hike as the price one pays.

This is pure BS. Its an end run to get a tax increase without a referendum voted on by the citizens. It won't be temporary. The tolls on the beltway were supposed to be temporary after beltway was paid for. Turner is playing one from Chicago's mayor Rahm playbook, “never let a crisis go to waste.”

He really wants to do the right thing, but the city council will turn it down because the people are already hurting.

Democrat political theater.

They should raise sales tax instead of property tax. I am pretty sure many people in Houston don’t own any property.

So all building materials will have a 9% tax slapped on? Really?

Isn’t this tantamount to gouging?

It sure isn’t. They never come all the way back down.

The demand 9%, on a temporary basis. Then when it’s about to end, they play up the fact it’s time to lower it by 0.50 to 0.75 percent.

Point is, they’ll leave on 25 to 50% of the increase.

But the people who have to pay it are out of a job because of the hurricane. Plus their houses are gone.

Just like a liberal. Spend spend spend. Never allow room in your budgets. Spend every nickel then come back to the trough for more. Monumental fiscal mismanagement.
