China thinks the US holds the key to resolving North Korea crisis
South China Morning Post ^ | 09/11/2017

US President Donald Trump has regularly called on China to stop North Korea’s nuclear advancement, even saying in July it could “easily” end the crisis. In Beijing, however, leaders think the opposite.

While the United States and China agree that the Korean peninsula should be rid of nuclear weapons, they differ on how best to achieve that. The sense of urgency is heightened in Washington, as the US suddenly finds itself potentially in range of Kim Jong-un’s nuclear weapons, whereas China and North Korea’s other neighbours have lived with that threat for years.

Trump has said China should use its economic leverage as North Korea’s top trading partner to quickly end Kim’s nuclear ambitions.

China, however, sees no need to trigger a potential catastrophe on its border over what it regards as fundamentally a dispute between the US and North Korea. Indeed, Beijing has warned that rhetoric from both sides – the US has threatened military action against North Korea – is making things worse.

In China’s eyes, Kim won’t give up his nuclear arsenal even if Beijing shuts off its oil supply – despite the economic pain that could cause. That is because his weapons programme gives him a deterrent against the US, which North Korea has frequently said wants to attack it. It also is central to his ability to hold onto power at home by presenting an image of ultimate strength and control to North Koreans, including his generals.

The only way Kim might stop, the thinking goes, is for the US to offer him a security guarantee, such as signing a legally binding non-aggression treaty. But former US negotiator Christopher Hill said the US is concerned that, even with a treaty, the regime could not be trusted not to use its weapons

We sure do... Just mark “Return to Sender” on every product arriving that was made in China.

It would take about a week, and fat-boy would be on his knees kissing ass.

A nice try in redirection, but it is not going to work.

China should be concerned about the potential radiation coming over their border should a certain test site collapse.

Whether they want to recognize it or not this is very much China’s problem.

China could have ended the Korean threat any time they wanted, but they won’t.

Oh! So China is ok with any and all US action that we deem fit to solve this crisis. And China will not intervene on behalf of their ally?

OR... China expects America to offer more financial aid and nuclear fuel in a handshake deal with inspector ghosts regularly reading NK reports about how they are disarming and not producing nuclear grade weapons and delivery systems. ?

Yes we do.

If China can’t reign in their North Korean ally, we will have no choice but to counter balance that existential threat with our own local nuclear armed allies, Japan, the Republic of China (Taiwan if you must), South Korea, and perhaps even the Philippines...

I think China is afraid of NK.

The flight time to Beijing is minutes...............

China is the only reliable source of income and wealth NK has. And even that is suspicious.

Think about this. NK does mining and fishing. That’s about it for exports. They may be selling weapons to Iran. Who buys most of their mined goods and fish? China. And what does china pay with? Oil? (We don’t know for sure). But we can be sure that if China quits buying from NK, NK would fall apart quickly.

On a much grander scale, if the USA quit buying from China, China would be in trouble too (though not as dramatically). But America would feel some pain too by stopping imports from China. Prices would go up and jobs would be lost.

The ChiComs may indeed be afraid. Their internet is tightly controlled, and a popular reference to Dear Eater as “Kim Fat the Third” has been censored by the regime.

Yet, they have told Phat Boi that if he attacks first, he is on his own. Rather different from 1950.

Then they really need to be more afraid of us. At best the N-orcs have a half dozen or so warheads. We have thousands, and the flight times from a nuclear armed Taiwan, a nuclear armed Japan, a nuclear armed South Korea and even a nuclear armed Philippines are also measured in minutes.

When the Soviet Union wanted our nuclear armed missiles out of Turkey, they started to put theirs in Cuber.

It worked. We counted victory as getting their missiles out of Cuber, and they counted victory in getting our missile out of Turkey.

Win-win, the art of the deal and all that...

China can’t condemn North Korean without disparaging their own sordid history. When they look at Kim Jong Un, it is like looking in the mirror at their own founder. North Korea has an offensive strategic plan and is not motivated by “security concerns” any more than China is motivated by “security concerns” when it builds a new airstrip in the South Sea.

“It worked. We counted victory as getting their missiles out of Cuber, and they counted victory in getting our missile out of Turkey.”

I tend to agree, but Nikita K might not. He got ousted by Brezhnev over it.

Trump should tell them he’s going to use that “key” - by shoving it up China’s arse and twisting vigorously.
