Brit arrested after becoming first person to swim over Hoover Dam’s deadly turbines

A Brit has become the first person to swim across the US's Hoover Dam

He escaped being dragged under during his 30-minute swim only because nine of its ten hydroelectric turbines were off.

Arron, 28, said: “It was so hot that as soon as we arrived I jumped in.

“Then I just thought, ‘Why not keep going?’

“I was sucked towards the wall and had to swim hard. At the other side I was exhausted. Then I heard police shout.”

The Hoover Dam, on the border of Arizona and Nevada, provides water and electricity for Las Vegas — but 275 people have died there in a decade.

But in the middle of a 37-hour booze bender, superhuman Arron, who fittingly has a Superman tattoo on his arm, paddled his way into the history books.

Forklift driver Arron, of Ruthin, North Wales, was handcuffed and fined £250.

The feat took him from Nevada to Arizona and took around half an hour

“I would say I was swimming about 50 to 100 metres from the wall of the dam and at one point I felt myself getting sucked towards it and had to swim away quite hard.

“When I got to the other side I was exhausted and had to sit down on the rocks. That was when I heard the police shouting ‘Oi, come here lad.’

“I was handcuffed and taken back to their office at the dam."

Cops watched in horror as Arron crossed the reservoir behind the iconic American structure – hailing him “the luckiest man alive”.

BS headline. He swam over ONE turbine. NINE were off. No plural.

"Oi, come here lad"

Somehow I don't think that is precisely what the police were shouting.... doesn't sound like American idiom!

Is there ever a day that goes by when a drunken British tourist doesn’t do something stupid and embarrassing?

Do they recover anything when the bodies do get sucked through the turbines? I mean, is there a filter or anything to catch parts of the carcass? It seems like it would be a gooie mess spilled into the river on the other side. I suppose it would be sufficiently diluted and make good feed for wildlife.

If sucked in he would most likely drown but I suspect they have some sort of screen to block large items (like tree branches or stray animals) from actually reaching the turbines

It seems like it would be a gooie mess spilled into the river on the other side.

The volume of water flowing through there when the turbines are on is enormous. You probably wouldn't even see a red stain. The fish downstream would like it just fine, though ...

“Oi, come here lad”

“Somehow I don’t think that is precisely what the police were shouting.... doesn’t sound like American idiom!”

If by “Oi, come here lad,” he meant “hey, come here, you stupid son of a b!tch!” then, maybe he’d be right.

Would have been a shame if he got sucked into a turbine. You can damage a blade that way...

WoW. I know it's brutally hot there but that's a heck of a way to cool off.

Fool!

(but this will get him TV appearances and possibly a book and movie deal)>
