With Florida taking a horrific pounding from Irma so soon after Harveys flooding farther west, its now plain that President Trump was right to take that deal with Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi last week.
By agreeing to kick the can on the debt-limit and spending battles three months down the road, Trump avoided having Washington locked in another inside-baseball battle when so many Americans are suffering.
Maybe the president couldve been nicer to GOP leaders Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan while taking the Dem offer. But the grim truth is that the Republicans elaborate strategizing has failed utterly so far this year.
Its September, and ObamaCare remains unrepealed, unreplaced and unfixed. Any kind of tax reform or tax cut is now dicey, and even funding the government through the end of the next fiscal year is almost certainly going to require another one of those ginormous, swamp-feeding omnibus bills.
We doubt there are many future deals to be had with the Democrats, but Ryan and McConnell were going to have to swing one on the debt limit eventually: Dozens of House members in the Freedom Caucus wont budge on their demands for spending cuts in exchange for raising the limit, but those demands wont pass in the Senate.
Ryan wanted to push for a longer extension of the limit in the deal, but theres zero certainty hed have gotten it. And its entirely possible that Schumer and Pelosi wouldve increased their demands as time went on.
And, again, a standoff would have left Trump and the GOP Congress looking utterly self-absorbed in face of what will now be hundreds of billions of dollars in damage from Harvey and Irma, on top of all the lives lost and disrupted....

It says a lot about the GOP when Trump can get more done (a lot more CONSERVATIVE stuff done even) by working with the flipping crazy Democrats than with members of his own party.
stoopid Paul Ryan
Is Irma as bad as it was predicted to be?
“Maybe the president couldve been nicer to GOP leaders Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan while taking the Dem offer. But the grim truth is that the Republicans elaborate strategizing has failed utterly so far this year.”
Yeah, but the “uncomfortable look” on McConnell’s face as he sat there next to “Beavis” Schumer in the meeting with Trump was priceless. He looked like he’d just been forced to hoover a turd.
You don’t have to swing hard to hit a homerun.
If you got the timing, it’ll go.
Yogi Berra
LoL!
Great description of the look on McConnell’s face.
If the GOPee doesn’t straighten up maybe Trump should run as a dem in 2020...he could also bring the dem party back toward a semblance of sanity.
IMO the last dem president that was anywhere near normal was JFK.
Trump’s actions make him look reasonable and compassionate. His enemies attacking him as “literally Hitler” will take a huge blow. Expect the Democrats to attempt to “work” with the President and cool off the constant attacks.
It’s pretty close to what actual meteorologists predicted. Overall though, it’s still an ongoing event, so time will tell.
Is Irma as bad as it was predicted to be?Why don't you ask the victims of Irma after tomorrow if they're happy with the results?
Getting rid of rhe debt ceiling Isindeed compassion.. blank checks for every dem program.. meanwhile, we have no wall funds and he’s going to make congress act on daca.. they will get amnesty, now that there is no debt ceiling holding them back.
No more purse strings holding back Pelosi n shumer.. just get ready to pay up, taxpayers.
Maybe the president couldve been nicer to GOP leaders Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan while taking the Dem offerWhy should he be the nice one after the arrogant bastards publicly bad-mouth, ridicule and lie to him...with a snear?
They can (and should) rot in hell.
A “blank check” for 3 months instead of the 18 months the RINOs wanted that would have covered them through the next round of elections? Trump made the right deal.
A “clean” relief bill with offsetting budget cuts was impossible?!? Barring that a debt ceiling increase of exactly $15 billion and no more was impossible? Mr. Trump is the leader of the Republican party with majorities in both houses, pick off a few “blue dog” Dems if you must, but it is too early to give up and deal with the devil(s).
Screw McConnell, Ryan and the rest of their team. For 8 months they’ve had a golden opportunity to call the shots and have produced zero, nil, nada, bupkus.
I hope the slap in the face gets them off their duffs, but not holding my breath. As much as we all despise Pelosi, Reid etc they were able to keep their caucus united and get the job done for Obama. If GOP can’t do it then fire them then they are worthless and deserve to be fired in 2018.
I do find it amusing that Dems are now threatening to shut down govt in December unless Dreamer Act is passed. Sounds like a win-win to me and hopefully Trump will see it that way. Nobody will mind shut down after hurricane season is over.
“A clean relief bill with offsetting budget cuts was impossible?!? “
Yes, because all of the NeverTrumps Republicans in Congress are busy continually plotting to stall anything Trump wants, to kill any program Trump needs, and basically do anything they can to obstruct Trump or make him look bad. Basically acting like Democrat Lite.
The problem is, if you’re going to act like Democrat Lite, there’s no good reason to not actually just cut that crap out and go deal with the actual Dems. At least they don’t claim to be Trump’s allies then stab him in the back repeatedly. And there’s always some liberal Republicans that can be picked off on many issues.
Ryan was going to try to bollix things up to hurt Trump’s image. Trump sidestepped.
Will Florida be a safe state for Trump in 2030?
;-)
I very much suspect that Trump’s ego
prevents him from understanding the
fact that much of his “support” is
really not that so much as LOATHING
for all things on the left, including
their cheerleaders. That’s where I
stand. If I see him getting into bed
with those assholes, I’m out of his
camp because I firmly believe that
everything the left supports is bad
for America.
A complete surrender to the left and once again the worst outcome for taxpayer citizens.
