Crazy! I’ve had the guilt thing for days...but doing a little volunteer work helps. People here have been working together in neighborhoods , very inspiring.

I know what you mean, I feel guilty every time I walk in the door and feel air conditioning....

Helping folks in the area by helping them keep their borrowed generators fueled up and running relieves a bit of the guilt....

It’s ok, it would’ve been cool to find out trucks were in their area!

It’s funny because when we lived in North Carolina for nine years before we moved back here, we would lose power when there was a heavy thunderstorm. It was nothing to have several incidences of outages a month there, but now that we’re back in Florida, we haven’t once lost power for two years now. I think the difference is underground power cables where we are versus the overhead wiring that is still very common. Maybe one day we will have an electrical service that never fails.

I agree. It could have easily been any one of us as totally wiped out like those on the islands just devastated by Irma. I feel so terrible for them and have been praying regularly. I almost donated to the Red Cross today when checking out at Publix - they were collecting for them - but hesitated so I could learn a bit more about what they actually do with the money. I’d hate for a big part of it to go to some CEO’s salary or fringe benefits. Does anyone know about the Red Cross? I’ve heard Samaritan’s Purse was good but don’t know if they are actively helping Irma victims.

There may be a local group in your area collecting goods for the more devastated areas. I just learned tonight that a local group is taking donations of supplies, then moving them by boat to the Keys. They have already made one trip. I plan to bring goods to the collection location tomorrow.

I think you may be right. Several other FReepers who have buried utilities have cited the very same thing - they rarely lose power. We're unfortunately stuck with overhead wiring and LOTS of trees here. Not a great combination...

Sorry about the late post.

Been out of action for a bit and had to back up.

The Beauvoir estate suffered major tree damage during that storm (Elana) but all was cleaned up. I ended up in a Veterans Graveyard because I was pretty handy with a chainsaw.

We were served lunch by the caretaker everyday. She would put the plates out on tombstones.

She said they appreciated our effort. :^)

Now to answer your question. 4 million was put back into the home to get it to 1852 standards after Katrina.

I understand it is just as it stood, and shall remain so.

Thanks. I’ll look into it further here. I know many charities ask for money, but it just seems a little off when there is NOTHING to buy in some of those places even with a lot of money. Those effected the most just need basic necessities - food, water, clothing, bedding, shoes, baby items, etc. and a way to get it to them. I read of armed looters in the Caribbean lying in wait for relief boats and stealing what IS brought in. I hope the military steps in to resolve that PRONTO.

Low-lying Sunshine Key, between Bahia Honda State Park, and Big Pine Key, is mostly covered with RVs in winter. About half of those remaining during the off-season were rolled over. The very few "permanent" structures didn't look too bad.

FYI..Just got a periscope from #blueshed Jeff. He reports TD#15 is headed toward the Leewards, then PR, then may DR. It will become Hurricane Maria along the way. ... Until it builds an eye they can’t track it..but maybe sorta Carolinas...or not.

I heard from rodguy911. He is home with electricity, but no internet/phone/tv, and spotty cell service. His daughter and SIL are staying with them due to damage in lower Keys.

There is a large weather blob still on the West African continent. That one is very creepy looking.
